Typographic pub name for new drinking hole!

Double Elephant

Hi,

My local pub (near my letterpress printing studio) has decided to expand to a new (second) pub that'll be just round the corner from a couple of big publishing companies.

All the houses in the area were originally built for printers, so it would only seem right to have a printing related name for the new pub.

The landlord's current pub (my local) is called the Rusty Bicycle and they'd like a similar name (quirky adjective followed by printing term) for their new place, without the printing name being too obscure (preferably, the non-designer public will know what it means).

Current favourites:
The Wonky Press
The Inky Fist
etc

Any suggestions?

Thanks

Most of these don't follow your pattern exactly but they might work as quirky names for a pub:

The Drop Cap
The Em Dash
The Ink Trap
The Wrong Sort
The Tempered Punch
The Leaden Slug

.. preferably, the non-designer public will know what it means ..

So not just targeted at the ink-crowd?

The Inky Press

Printer's Den

Printer's Devil

Garamond's Folly

Caslon's Table

Basker Villa

Ye Excessively-Swashy Ampersand Bar & Grille

> The Ink-Crowd

Haha, very good, very good.

Some great suggestions so far!

Love the Wrong Sort!

The Lower Case
The Upper Case
The Black Letter
The Wood Type
The Lead Type
The Golden Type
The Swash Capital
The Grotesque Face
Walk Like An Egyptian

I'm with Riccardo, especially The Upper Case and the lower case.

Or how about The Upper and lower case? (U&lc is too obscure.)

The Dog's Bollo... no, perhaps not. :—

(I like Eric's suggestion of The Space Bar)

Linecaster FC

The Generous Margin

The Double Dagger

Nuts and Muttons

The Quoin Key

Probably not a good idea: ETAOIN SHRDLU

Definitely not a good idea: The Tittle Bar

Definitely not a good idea: The Tittle Bar

But why not Jots and Tittles?

Riccard0 is onto it, my vote is for The Upper Case. Its quirky and simple enough for the general public to get...
How exciting, please show us some of your work when finished!

My favourites:
The Lost Serif
Inking Hole
Basker Villa

A few more:
The Slanted Pint
The Slanted Pub
The Quick Brown Pub
The Gutter

Tweet Street

The quick brown fox

Or The Lazy Dog!

(You should definitely sell liquor out of jugs pulled from boxes.)

The Lazy Dog is excellent.

The Lazy Dog & Fox is more accurate

Personally I think "The Ink Trap" is a fabulous name. I'm also partial to "The Em Dash."

The only name you can't use is "Zapf Dingbats." That's a registered trademark of ITC.

Cheers,

T

There is one term that combines drinking facilities and letterpress printing: “counter”.
So what about
The [Thirsty|Filled|Printing|…] Counter?

The Counter Punch

Or maybe just "At The Printer's"?

The King's Roman

"Counter punch" sounds like it should be on the menu instead (together with T-bone steaks).

Command P

"The Nut & Mutton"

:)

Do like the ring of the counter punch also!

i like "at the printer's," too. but just calling the pub, "the printer's" would be hilarious—you'd be able to say, "i'm just going to 'the printer's.'" or, "i was at that 'the printer's' all day."

*("rutsy" being the connection between the 2 pubs)

I’d say,

The Quick Brown Fox

or

The Lazy Dog

are among the hot candidates.

However, *Kustunienhof* could serve as an alternate option ;-)

This is by far one of the most typophile threads for a long time!
Very nice.

Alas, do we get enlightened about in which city the venue is going to be? (or did I miss something?)

The Infernal DIN

Lol I like that last one. Also, The Thirsty Pig, or The Broken Bar

Ouch, @Birdy, you just about had me ROFling with that one.

How exciting, this just might jumpstart a good old tradition of printer's bars that tramp printers used to frequent in search of working opportunities. I could just picture some beer-soaked stonemen sitting in the corner, playing a game of quads (jeffing), or a rugged foreman bellowing out a song about an old printer's towel.
-It fell to the floor and was broken in two!

Actually, a "Tramp Printer" might be a good name for a pub.

Couple more:

The Hanging Pig
The Rolling Turtle
The Melting Slug
Þe Croked Forme
The Printer and his Devil
Inky Balls

I like "The Lazy Dog."

Another one is "The Printers Devil"—old name for a printer's apprentice.

Titivillus!

The (dr)inking Hole

The Quick Brown Fox, I think, is more easily recognizable as a play on a typesetter's term than The Lazy Dog, although I think both make good pub names :)

Widows and Orphans, maybe?

Galley Proof
The Inked plate
Blue line
The Coarse Grid
The Stationery Bicycle

Finials
or
Gadzooks
… or both‽

I like "The Space Bar" the best, by far.
It's a fun name for a pub for print/type nerds, space nerds, and spacey people (ooh - and Kevin!)

The Burned Plate

The Slug
Lorem Ipsum

Well, do share! Did you find the right name?

@eliason – The Generous Margin actually made me laugh out loud. Superb.

I'd missed this cool thread!
So, have they made a decision yet?

hhp

If the pub isn't already named, may I recommend:

Wayzgoose

@Hellbox: Many good names here, yet there appears to be an alarming number of names that start with “The…” It may be work considering many of them without the “The…”

Can you describe the decor and clientele of the pub (after you have taken it over)?

Oh I missed it too!

Drunken Dingbats?

Hey, my home town gets a mention in the 2nd line of contemporary uses under Wayzgoose. Unfortunately there is no trace left whatsoever in the town of the once mighty industry behind the Wharfedale printing press.
