Removal of Banksy artwork

Nick Cooke

I read today that Hackney council are going to remove all of Banksy’s Graffiti in the borough. Considering that his ’work’ goes for up to a million nowadays, (the price that Brangelina supposedly paid for one of his pieces), it would be a shame. The council should be encouraging people to go on a ’Banksy trail’ walking tour, not obliterating these works of art. It adds interest to an otherwise not very interesting area.

Here’s a witty bit of vandalism I spotted last time I was in The Smoke.

That sucks. But what do you expect from a Hackneyed borough.

I recently noticed that his image of the kissing cops had been repaired and protected with a sheet of glass. It’s a shame when a graffiti artist actually has talent and skill and nobody appreciates it, but I guess that sort of comes with the territory.

Well, it *is* vandalism. Albeit quite artful. I’d hate for any government entity to get into the game of legislating artistic merit.

Besides, look at the kerning on that piece. It had to go.

Thats EINE not banksy.

he had an exhibition at the kemistry gallery recently.

bleh stencils etc..

Oh dear. I look like a fool now! I could have sworn it was Banksy with that figure sitting between the S and M.

What the hell, it’s probably for the chop as well.

Never heard of EINE - is he/she responsible for all those large caps on shop shutters in that area?

Hoefler wrote about Eine on Typographica last year. Good stuff in the comments too.

fao nick - banksy and eine work together. could be why?.
yep he did the caps on shopfronts. seen posters of the letters in shoreditch spelling out ’alphabeats’ recently.

just happy to chip in finally and give something back to the site.
