Suggestions for a bitmap typeface (others then Screen Matrix, Knit Map and Folk Art)

Maria de Lurdes

Hello!

I’m looking for a bitmap typeface with a construction similar to these ones:
Screen Matrix, Knit map and Folk art.
I would like it to be more neutral then folk art but more gentle and delicate then Screen Matrix.
Do you have any suggestions that might help me?

Thanks a lot in advance.

Gretel and FF Nelio might not be what you’re looking for, but they are others in this elegant pixel genre.

You might also like FF Screenstar which is a simple pixel sans, but a tad more style than FF Screen Matrix.

Nick Shinn’s Panoptica is also very interesting and Unibody is without doubt the finest free pixel family.

Here are a few others to try:

As an aside, does anybody know what happened to Atomic Media?

> Unibody is without doubt the finest free pixel family.

Based on its weaknesses (primitive construction,
dysfunctional italic) I myself doubt plenty.

On the other hand (?) it is good enough that
they did the field a disservice by making it free.

Based on its weaknesses (primitive construction, dysfunctional italic)

I’ve not yet seen an 8 pixel high font that doesn’t have primitive construction and dysfunctional italics. How could it be anything else?

I said primitive construction. Using discrete squares to render out the pixels is the lowest form of pixelfont; it causes (at least) two problems, plus it makes the font unnecessarily large in K. As for the Italic, the real problem I guess is simply pretending it is one. If they had called it Cursive then I would have no issue, since users would know what it’s not.

Another problem with Unibody is its obsession with ductus, even in such a coarse medium/size; look at how ungainly the bold “y” is. Dogma interfering with Design.

Hrant, my font anatomy/vocabulary is very limited. What is ’ductus’ in relation to type?

See the typowiki: ductus

It refers to the “action” of the broad-nib pen (when used by a right-hander).
If you’re smelling a rat, you have a good nose.

Hrant, please point me to some pixel families that you prefer to Unibody.

I just said I have doubt, not that I could name
offhand any free* ones that are better. :-)

* Your criterion above, and a good one.

Hrant, should I smell a rat? I first saw it merely as a design affectation but now I can see what you’re saying about the ductus of the bold y, v and w. Would I be right in saying that the Ductal Logic hasn’t been consistently applied to the middle upright of the bold w?

There are free pixel fonts galore here...

...with, I would guess, a broad range of Ductal Logics. (my new favourite phrase :)

My point was forcing ductal logic on a 10ppem* font (or really any font) comes at the expense of Good Design. The “w” on the other hand goes against ductal logic and still manages to look crappy.

* I don’t know where people get 8.

> a broad range of Ductal Logics.

Yes, and we sadly only have one single font
so far that properly breaks the logic: Legato.

Thanks a lot! Good help.
