Design of Gourmet Food Labels

cordovez

I have to design Olive Oil labels (with more products to come). do you have any sources of inspiration? Labels that make you go “Wow!”. Books, Web sites?

I’m looking for inspiration. I’m desperate.

This will be my first time. After years of mediocre design for undeserving clients and design agencies, I am now crippled with stunted typographic skills.

PS—I live in Ireland, so I can’t visit the local Safeway to look at labels on the shelves if you are directing me to American brands.

Is this a nixer for your uncle Don Carlos - the olive oil mogul?

Check out the resources on the AIGA site:

PS—I live in Ireland too.

OK, this isn't much but I instantly remembered this nice newsletter from Fontshop..

Hey Henry,

If Don Carlos were my uncle, I'm sure I wouldn't be working for a living! :-)

makes me go YUM!

Thanks PattyFab

Why was the thread swopped over? There were some good/useful examples in the other thread.

To quote myself from the other thread:

I’ve always liked Templin Brink’s packaging for Charles Chocolates, Camino Real Tequila and Archer Farms (they may not be gourmet, but they’re quite beautiful).

If you’re in Dublin, pop into Fallon & Byrne on Exchequer Street or there’s also downstairs in Avoca on Suffolk Street. Both hosts of gourmet packaging inspiration.

Nothing was swapped. I just closed commenting on that thread so the conversation wouldn't get redundant.

I'm loving the Dorset Cereal boxes we have over here in blighty.

[Edit]

I wonder how my post here from earlier was deleted....

It was a suggestion of a label for olive oil that - well, I just love what the designer did to it. Simplistic yet elegant...
And I've remembered it since the first time I laid eyes on it...

Jackie, the other thread still exists, it has been closed for comments to avoid duplication.

Thank you Tim

I didn't realize that there are two of the same threads around.

great packaging for Dorset Hamilton, thanks.

Dear Cordovez. If you still have not found a solution, how about calligraphy? Type is static by comparison and usually dejà vu as well. Handwriting done by a professional calligrapher like myself can infuse alphabetic communication with originality and a freshness that type can never match.

cordovez for a Wow factor, try to highten the senses. Bold sensual product represnetation with strong clean type.
As for colour schemes I'm almost of two minds, but try to stay within an analogous colour palette, with labels and type in monochrome (you might try using tight lines of gold or other earth metal tones to highten a black or white label).

But hey, bold warm colour product palette with a pop of complementary hue 'may' have a chance, but I'd be real careful with that application.

What's the form of the product containers? And what's the income bracket your client wants to attract?

Also, there is an olive oil bottle (not sure what company) which has an olive oil drip down the bottle printed on it.
