Designing Gourmet Food Labels

cordovez

I have to design Olive Oil labels (with more products to come). do you have any sources of inspiration? Labels that make you go "Wow!". Books, Web sites?

I'm looking for inspiration. I'm desperate.

This will be my first time. After years of mediocre design for undeserving clients and design agencies, I am now crippled with stunted typographic skills.

PS—I live in Ireland, so I can't visit the local Safeway to look at labels on the shelves if you are directing me to American brands.

I’ve always liked Templin Brink’s packaging for Charles Chocolates, Camino Real Tequila and Archer Farms (they may not be gourmet, but they’re quite beautiful).

If you’re in Dublin, pop into Fallon & Byrne on Exchequer Street or there’s also downstairs in Avoca on Suffolk Street. Both hosts of gourmet packaging inspiration.

Stonehouse -- since the first time I went to ID it - has stuck with me... there is something about it's simplicity that I just like what the designer did.

Louise Fili does some beautiful packaging work; you might check out her website for some inspiration.

Thanks Conor, good tips

Thanks everyone, keep 'em coming, they are all good. Louise Fili is great for the logos too

Under foodstuffs there is a nice series of labels. What other products are you looking at, are you designing just a label or the bottle as well?

there will be vinegars and pasta sauces too. The bottle can be anything too.

I love the Fili and Starck stuff… nice nice nice.

Louise's flash intro drives me nuts. Also I think she's starting to rip herself off a bit, some of those logos are awfully repetitive. But there's some great stuff there.

…she’s starting to rip herself off…

That’s what happens when you fall into the world of nicheville. She says she’s done over 1000 book jackets too… hard to do that without repitition or sliding quality.

I still think the work’s great.

Interesting she went from books to packaging. I've done both as well and vastly prefer books. I'm also a bit bitter because twice I lost design jobs to her because of her "name".
