Quote a single Typophile post

Alessandro Segalini

Is it possible to quote (link) a single Typophile post ?
What will be the specific URL ?

If you mean linking to specific post in a thread from another page, the answer is no, I think.

The following link will get you close, though.

http://typophile.com/node/29875?from=2&comments_per_page=1

That would be useful. I know you can link to a specific post in a thread, but I'm not sure how to find out what that specific post is... without being a moderator.

Yeah, I’ve already requested this in the To Do thread. It could be as simple as giving each post an id. This would be post-4, or post-3 if you start with zero.

you just have to find the comment id and add it to the end of your link preceded by a pound sign:

http://typophile.com/node/30068#comment-173301

or you can just include the comment number preceded by a slash and you get the first comment of the thread, and the comment you're referring to:

http://typophile.com/node/30068/173301

How do you find the comment id?

you have to look at the page source code. maybe the powers that be can expose this information to make it more readily available for folks wanting to link to a specific comment.

That would be useful.
The id is easy to find. It's all a question of experimenting and see if it works.

Yep, I found it : http://typophile.com/node/30068/173373 – it's a bit tricky like that, tho, and the thread first post shows up as well (but, kitti, funny quotations Lari Elovainio :)
Am I discovering the hot water now, or to link the related "reply" URL is effective ?

What’s up with the empty anchors?

Kuis pyyhkii ?

I think that if you click on the "reply" link at the bottom of the post you wish to link to, the URL of that post shows up in the URL field of your browser with the addition of "#new" after it. If you leave offf the # new, I think you have that posts URL.

I am testing this link:

http://typophile.com/comment/173387

Nope, didn't work :-/

ChrisL

You mean this, Chris ?
http://typophile.com/comment/reply/30068/173387

What a funny game !
Lets do the random quote of the week

Pyyhkii ihan hyvin, Ale. Mites Taikki? Mitä jäbä on suunnitellu?

That is it Alessandro! I should have left the "reply" in.

ChrisL

Guess Typophiles missed this:
http://typophile.com/node/28383?from=24&comments_per_page=50
To the node number, just add this:
?from=nn&comments_per_page=01
Where nn is the post number.

I would like to add that the scroll pointer indicates roughly the number of the posting and 2 or 3 steps of successive approximation to find out the exact number!
All the Best.

Terve, hyvää Lari, kiitos, Taik… it was great a time, really.
I have been designing a few things, here's my paper——interesting that "to plan"
and/or "to design" is the same word in Finnish, i.e. "suunnitella".

There should shown up an automatically generated ID-Number available in every posting (better as a link, which you can copy&paste) with that you can go directly to a certain posting within a thread.
Something like -
www.typophile.com/node/30068/12
("12" at the end would say, the posting with number 12, within the thread with the number 30068)

For example:

12
poms
14 December, 2006 - 6:27pm
[pict of the user]

Yes, exactly like that Thomas Binder.
That would also allow to refer to the post number when someone need to quote someone else's post within the same thread, like "regarding the post no. 12, I'd say that would also allow to refer […]," of course sometime you need to quote a specific part of the message but still, it could be useful for that, too, I think.

If you want to go further, like – you need to refer to a specific part of the message within a specific posting –
something like this could be made by using;
html-output:
paragraph text…
paragraph text…

  • listitem
  • listitem

html:
<p id="automaticallyGeneratedID1">paragraph text…</p>
<p id="automaticallyGeneratedID2">paragraph text…</p>
<p id="automaticallyGeneratedID3">paragraph text…</p>
<ul id="automaticallyGeneratedID4">
<li>listitem</li>
<li>listitem</li>
</ul>
<p id="automaticallyGeneratedID5">paragraph text…</p>

with that you could refer to a specific html-element within a specific posting, given an generated identifier in chronology the user writes his structured message. Every line break would generate a new paragraph-element and so on.
Hehe, ok, that might be to much "usability".

Thanks Thomas Binder, can you make {post} a quick example ?

There’s more to a topic than just node numbers — there’s date, time and user. Have been doing a bit of experimenting to see how to navigate using the various database fields. Ever tried to navigate using the various database fields? Think it could be done?

@Alessandro Segalini
Sorry, i have no access to the typophile.com php-libraries and mysql-database ;)
The guys which "host and code" typophile.com know what i'm talking about.

If you write in your comment-textfield, you can format visual paragraphs manually, with your enter-key (hardbreak). This could create <br> or <br /> or new paragraphs <p></p> (that is what i was talking about). This is a descision of the programmers. If you create paragraphs instead of <br>-Elements you can give them a dynamic-id, if you want to. If it has an identifier you can work with it, like i mentioned before, ie you can link directly to a specific paragraph, within a posting, within a thread.
If you don't get what i trying to describe, i can make a (static) example on my webspace if i have the time. (sorry, my english...)
- short said, i mean, it's possible to jump to specific anchors

Oh, danke Thomas Binder, programming is quite amazing, I can't get what you described but I get the gist, it would be nice to see a static example if you have time.
