So, what's going on here? Is this, I dunno, Gill Sans (top) and gasp impact (bottom)?

Read all about the designer of the poster:

That would be an uplifting and inspiring (and slightly corny) article if the poster didn't suck so bad.

unknown

From the looks of it he was also assigned to design the website.

Marc, yeah, that's how I ended up here. Leave it to an in-house IT Guy to come up with a combination of an "unidentified Frutiger-like" and Impact No offense to in-house IT guys

Yes, it's a pity, especially since you can really have fun designing Oscar stuff - here's a cover I did 2 years ago. I did NOT do that logo with the 75 on the left - that came from the Academy.

Hard to rise above the sophistication level of the client. Hard to sell something there is no percieved need for.

... because it's so fast.

Yup, that sure is some detailed and complicated work. Only with the newest, finest and fastest technology at hand could he have pulled off such a masterpiece.
BTW those gradients are perfectly rendered. Excellent.

Yves, what's funny is that the other posters must be better. Generally, Oscar posters are gaudy and glamorous but most of the time the typography is well considered and "elegant" in that hollywood way. This poster is clearly the work of system fonts. There is nothing unique about the poster's typography, much less the illustration which seems like a quick posterization/threshold in Photoshop. I like the "color" idea, I just don't like those colors.

So, no idea what type "Oscar" is? I can't believe the master is stumped!

From that "S" you can tell it's been stretched wide. Whateverthecrap it was to begin with. BTW, I actually think that poster is Good Design, because it perfectly matches what Oscars Night really is...

It looks like Abadi MT Condensed Extra Bold stretched out:
