Hard compressed blocks of charcoal.

Whatever is available at the time. Even a fork, if the paper at hand is soft enough to being incised.

Lately I have been a fan of the Lamy Pico, it is good for scribbling down details, plus it fits well in the pocket.

Stiff crow-quill pen, india ink on Bienfang Graphics 360 paper. Shot to film negative where the edges are clean up with a #16 xacto blade and my custom made sanded down french curve. This technique was taught to me by Ed. Benguiat.

The pen-tool in the iPad App ‘Paper’ produces wonderful swashes. That one is my favourite at the moment.

Lamy Accent with oblique medium nib. So smooth, I love writing with it.

You can't go wrong with a Staedler Mars Technico.

And I've been trying to get my chops up with a sable Mack Brush (Red Sable Lettering and Showcard Brush).

@Nick Cooke, I just bought that pen (except in black with silver rings and it is a ballpoint), absolute dream to write with.

In general I enjoy Lamy's pens thoroughly. Probably the most beautiful of which is the Lamy 2000. It's the Scarlett Johansson of pens.

• Parker ball-point—Isn’t that sleek as a 707? I’ll click it again!
• Sheaffer calligraphic pen—laborious and needs a good warm-up.
• 3 mm mechanical pencil—handy for developing drawings (the top harbors an eraser).
• Uni Ball—good for notetaking in Moleskin.
• Parker fountain pen—smoother and faster than the Sheaffer.

White cellophane tape was another handy addition to the toolkit for preparing camera-ready line art.

Porsche Design has a cool concept for one of their pens. Quite ugly though..

Dually noted. I shall write it down on my Moleskine "Movies to Watch" list with my faux Montblanc.

Since we’re talking about wuxia films with ties to calligraphy, “The bare-footed kid” by Johnnie To (the hero learns to write with a broom) and “Hero” by Zhang Yimou (parallels between the art of calligraphy and the art of the sword are a major plot element) are a must.
