Digital specimen books

grod

I've become obsessed with finding and printing specimen books, the more designed the better, but not many foundries offer much in the way of well designed .pdf examples. Can anyone point me at some great examples of specimens meant to be printed on a color laser printer?

The PDF for Metroflex is nice, in a molecular-diagram sort of way:

Chris Lozos' Leporello poster (July 12th post in thread) is one of the prettiest things to come out of my color laserprinter.

Have you missed the great specimen pdfs
form the Dutch Type Library?

Stefan Hattenbach has produced some very nice PDF specimens for many of his faces found at his Mac Rhino Foundry site. Because of the Flash-based site, you have to dig around the navigation a bit to locate and download them.

The PDFs produced by Underware are always a treat - but the recent Stick Out Your Thumb piece for their Auto family is absolutely priceless.

The Font Bureau also has some really nice PDF specimens...

Furthermore you could browse through the Foundries category
in the Typophile Open Directory Project to find more links...

Well this might not be a "great" specimen sheet but I like the text by Thoreau

re: pdf specimens
Ooops!
Sorry, text by Ralph Waldo Emerson, not Thoreau.

One of the best specimens i see, designed
by the Kent Lew, for Whitman typeface:

Other is a booklet for Rialto, made by dfType,
really great!

What does one put in a spec book?

At the one extreme, it's more specification than specimen, and that's the strtategy I followed here, 26 pages showing permutations of tracking at different sizes for all the Bodoni Egyptian family members, text block settings with different leading at a range of sizes, as well as full character complements of each font. (My inspiration was the old Alphatype CRT system spec sheets, c.1980, which I found to be most useful back in tha day.) But it's so much work, I've only ever finished this kind of specimen for one of my faces:

Erik van Blokland automated the whole procedure, of course, when he was producing the type sample part of Druk magazine (in print only, sorry Noah).

For my full collection specimen, I attempted to combine everything on one page for each typeface:

Absolutely awesome:

(but not much color...)

Nick
You didn't mention that the Storm Type Library pdf file is 9.8 mb. Too big for dial up.
While not in pdf form that I know of the Adobe 1989 specimen pamphlets of Adobe Garamond, Minion and Utopia, designed by Jack Stauffacher, Fred Brady, are very nice, kind of classics, though I have zillions of specimen books in my library.

Sorry Jordan, I didn't notice the size.

Mica,
Thank you very much for your kind compliment <blushing>.
