Recommend a new sans serif for a bus company

newintown

Hi Folks,

Long time lurker first time poster. I have been tasked with rebranding a private bus company. The rebrand will include Identity, Bus Information (Timetables, Bus Flags, Information Posters, Corporate literature).

Have been looking at Sans Serif Type all night (Looking at major bus public bus companies like TFL etc, Johnston, Din, Transit) but am looking for something relatively new with a least four different weights. Can anybody recommend a typeface that might fit my needs? Its a very exciting project to work on and I really want to get of to a good start by nailing the Typeface.

I appreciate and am thankful for any advice give.

What city?
Is this a high-end or budget bus system?

The worst thing about buses is their ponderousness,
and the relative smelliness of the average passenger.
You can offset the former with a light, narrow, slanted
font. The latter is harder. :-)

Dublin City, its a small bus system with high frequency serving a couple of local and cross city routes, but client wants a proper rebrand, there is budget to invest in good typography. Hope this helps.

So keep away from the typography and invest in a bottle of deoderant that can mass spray a bus load of passengers ;). I'll give it a whirl cheers. Any one else?

It indeed looks like an exciting project. For the main identity face, it would depend on the feeling the client is after (for example, some hint of irishness or a completely neutral international look?). But I think you will need something with proper Irish glyphs coverage in any case.
As for timetables, here (http://typophile.com/node/90212) are some considerations, and here (http://typophile.com/node/75444) some suggestions.

I've been on buses in Dublin. Far less smelly than in LA. :-)

Along the lines of what Riccardo said: can you (and do
you want to) get away with some -subtle- Gaelic flavor,
or is it supposed to be Continental?

You could just use Absara Sans. That's a nice font.

Make it look like a school bus, but just a little bit different. Perhaps a redder orange than normal, or placing the text outside the bus in a strange place. Make the literature look like the safety information booklet found on planes.

Hi Folks,

Thanks all for the suggestions.
At ricardo, its going to be an international look, highly functional, what ever typeface I will select will be versatile to work across all mediums, web, logotype, small print size for timetables, large signage etc. Looking at particular Sans serifs developed in the last 5 years for this particular type of project.

Before I sign of anyone else got suggestions?

Thanks again all.

"International" sans fonts are not difficult to find... :-/
If you want something recent but with character*,
consider Swagg: http://typographica.org/typeface-reviews/swagg/

* Since Dublin does have some itself!

Hi Folks,

Me again, was looking at Klavika, what are peoples thoughts on that typeface?

Klavika is a very good typeface. It also is very cold, and, to me, it feel already overused.
Have you looked at Olson's latest, Chrono? http://processtypefoundry.com/fonts/chrono/
Or Typographica's "Best of 2011"? http://typographica.org/features/our-favorite-typefaces-of-2011/
