Is that the best image that the Type Directors Club could produce for the World's premier typography competition?

And the links don’t work.

Can anyone report experiences like “I had business increase / carreer progress because I delivered successfully to TDC comp.” – ?
I’m just curious.

It's hard to know for sure exactly what impact selection in the TDC competition has on business or career. I view it as a form of publicity, cheap at the price, and I do know that my clients tend to be very happy when types I have designed for them are selected.

I believe that some part of the initial success of Whitman and my subsequent involvement in the type industry can be attributed to being included in the TDC² 2002 competition. The visibility and distinction helped open doors.

Guys, for crying out loud. This is just a quick and dirty screen shot. Yes, I was in a hurry to break the good news to this august assembly. Sorry if the poor quality of the image has offended some of you.

Andreas, I've been fortunate to have "placed" in a few type
competitions (although not the TDC) and although I haven't
had a client explicitly say "I came to you because of that
competition you won" I have used the wins to woo new clients;
and it's not difficult to imagine that somebody who sees your
work published in any capacity is more likely to give you
business - it's just like regular advertising. Also, getting the
top prize in Granshan 2008 helped me to get on the jury for
Granshan 2010, and needless to say that looks pretty good on
a résumé. So it all builds up in various ways.

Guys, for crying out loud … Sorry if the poor quality of the image has offended some of you.

Doesn’t sound like you’re really sorry Maxim.
I mean, you’re offering excuses to typophiles for not cutting you some slack for representing the TDC in a PR release with an image of ghastly-looking type?
And you’re the chair of the competition!

I've been waiting for your apology for years now Nick. All of us who were at the Cyrillic workshop were appalled at your behavior at the library.

I'm offended by the fact that Nick went to a workshop.

why am I not surprised

> and I'm offended by you.

OK. But that was simply a joke at Nick's
expense so your dramatic timing needs work.

All of us who were at the Cyrillic workshop were appalled at your behavior at the library.

What behaviour was that?

You don't remember your outburst at the library?

Interrupting the curator as he described the cyrillic collection?

I remember you said something to the effect of "are you going to keep talking or are we going to take a look at the books"

It was all quite shocking. The curator looked as if you had farted in his face.

Legendary.

The curator looked as if you had farted in his face.

Or smelled one of his own, as it dawned on him that his audience were type designers not academics, and that he was way off base.

I had paid TDC good money to attend a seminar which included a visit to the New York Public Library to look at specimen books, and instead there I was being forced to sit through a dreary unillustrated talk on Russian history, which had very little to do with type. After 15 minutes of that, and with the clock ticking down to closing time, I decided I’d do us all a favour at the expense of a little personal embarrassment. I don’t recall exactly what I said, but I’m pretty sure I would have interrupted the curator as politely as possible, with “Excuse me…” which is by way of an apology.

I didn’t feel an apology to the other designers was necessary, as I assumed they were thankful for my little “outburst” and I didn’t poll them to see whether they were appalled, offended, or merely amused by it.

I paid "good money" as well to attend.

I was enjoying the historical overview, so no, I wasn't thankful for your little outburst.

And no I don't recall anything polite about the way you conducted yourself. I don't recall an "excuse me" being offered.

Thanks for the reminder, Maxim.

In that case, I do apologize.
I hope I didn't sour relationships between the Library and the TDC.
