Good books on type/printing history

mjkerpan

It's that time of year when relatives starting asking me about a Christmas list again... Does anybody have some recommendations on books about type history that are a good read to get me through the winter?

Mike

What do you already have?

BTW, what's "winter"? (In LA we just have two summers, one high one low.)

Two I particularly like: Harry Carter, A View of Early Typography (Hyphen Press)

and Mac Mcgrew American Metal Typefaces of the Twentieth Century (Oak Knoll)

Dutch type by Jan Middendorp. beautiful type and book.

What Riccardo said.

Also there is (now) Letter Fountain which is fairly recent, fairly affordable, and details historical European typefoundries, if that's your bag.

Thanks for the hints, everyone. Some of these look great.
