How much time to design a single »Semi Condensed«-weight, inspired by Akzidenz Grotesk?

bennyd

Imagine, the task would be to exclusively design a »Semi Condensed«-font inspired by Akzidenz Grotesk for a client’s Corporate Design. Just this single weight.

How much time would it take for an advanced or semi advanced type designer to draw and how much should it cost?

Benny

Well...
Advanced, probably 2 - 5 days maximum...
Semi Advanced: about 1 - 2 weeks...

Copy Akzidenz Grotesk you mean?

No, not copy. Completely redraw a semi condensed weight which fits to Akzidenz Grotesk.

Wouldn't be one week a little short of time? I thought it would last at least a month… other opinions?

People work at very different speeds so it’s kinda hard to answer your question, but creating something inbetween the regular and condensed width is not a huge task.

If you draw it from the scratch or if you do it with the help of a multiple master, that was build with the existing font files?

Depends on the budget. :-)

Arno: Interpolating less so, but even drawing from scratch when you have the general model is nothing compared to figuring out everything from scratch.

If one can do this in 2–5 days from the scratch, he must be really good. I would have said, this needs two or two and a half weeks for the basic Latin alphabet at least – exclusively the kerning and only, if you are very experienced.

I'm slower than you Arno :) I'm just saying some can.

For a client I generally quote 3 weeks for an original individual weight. Week one the basic glyph set (UC, lc, figs, punct.), week two the sorts and accented glyphs, week three the final productizing. Spacing and kerning are part of the process throughout. If there are multiple weights and MM is used, it shortens the timeframe considerably. But then I work sort of fast.

thanks, very useful information.

BTW … Am I paranoid or why visited Harvey Hunt from Berthold/Chicago my Xing Profile just a few days ago?

As the Buffalo Springfield said,

"Paranoia strikes deep
Into your life it will creep
It starts when you're always afraid
You step out of line, the man come and take you away"

I think you should rephrase the job description to something similar to or inspired by AG.

The Hunt for Red October ;-)

Yes I already considered the »Standard« from Castletype but the condensed is too narrow. I need something inbetween the condensed and the regular.

Have you contacted CastleType?

BTW, yay for guillemets in English!
Although I prefer pointing them away from the quoted material.
