Indesign spacing with columns

favek

Hey all I am still a newb layout guy for a little town newspaper. One problem that has been nagging me is a spacing problem when I convert the copy into columns format. Some of the spacing between the words is horrible (ie to close or to far apart).

Maybe you guys could give me some tips on how to fix this?

Thanks

That could be Brother Word.
Do you have some soap ?
Try to switch visible the invisible characters & check.
Amen.

AS

By Brother Word I believe you are meaning Microsoft word? Yes the editor and all the volunteers use word.

Soap?

The invisible characters should be found in word or indesign?

In InDesign, when the text soup is placed.

Soap looks like a great program. To bad I am on a PC though :-(

The text soup is column of text right? Where I right click and see the options?

You Windozer ?
You Protestant ?

I remember the short-cut apple-J,
but I am not sure, and my RAM barks
if I open InDesign now. In the text menu.

Thanks Alessandro for your help.

Its seems that the text is fine when I check it with show hidden characters. The actual physcial spacing is fine just that some sentences done "wrap" well in columns. I really dont know how to fix it. Its funny cause when I use "Justify with last line alinged left" it looks good. But I would rather use columnns.

You are welcome.
I tell you, that is Brother Word.

AS

Hmm I am tryin to find that menu on my word program. The word "testo" I having trouble translating.

Sorry my italian (?) is rusty. :-)

Testo is 'text' (plural 'testi').
Testa is 'head' (plural 'teste').
Also, the pumpkin, 'zucca' can be used meaning 'head.'
Another word for head is 'capoccia' (from 'capo')
wich I think it means 'pumpkin' in Japanese.
Hypenation in InDesign is active ?

AS

No hypenation is not turned on. Should I have some marginal hypenation would that fix the problem?

I think hypenation is necessary
if you live far from Mr. Robin Kinross ;-)

AS

Ciao, I have to go to sleep,
otherwise I will fill this lovely Forum
with sommo' bullshits :-D

See you,
AS

Can you post a image of your text, Luis?

Try changing the columns' widths and the type size (if you are allowed to). From what you described here, I'm guessing that your columns are too narrow for the text. Also, I think you can adjust the justification settings in InD.

Ha, interesting.
But it's a 'b' instead of 'p': 'cabocha'.

Hey thanks for all the help again.

No, I cant change the column width or the font size. Usually text will end up looking way to spaced out or way to tight. We usually have to add a word or two to make it space right. Its really cutting into our production and making me look bad as well :-(

And, oh yah, I am a newb.
