Linn Boyd Benton and Morris Fuller Benton may be the most under-appreciated giants in the history of printing. The former was a natural engineer whose skills made him to printing what Tesla was to electricity. The latter was an engineer and one of the greatest type designers. Both were hardworking and humble men from Wisconsin. They cast a long shadow over printing and typography that has often been obscured by the lack of information they left about themselves.

Nice, James. Thanks for the reminder about this book. I meant to keep an eye out for when it came out last fall, but lost track.

You didn’t lose track of much, Kent. It only came out this month :)

Ah, okay. I thought it was due out before the end of last year (which it probably was — hey, I know how that goes).

I put in an order at RIT, but now I’m having them hold it until Jerry Kelly’s book ships in a few weeks and send both together.

If you’re not aware of that one, you might want to put it on your list. If I’m not mistaken, this is the same book Kelly was originally contracted to do for Mark Batty Publisher, but it got postponed for some reason and eventually pulled from their list.

Looking forward to getting both of these.
