Purchase and upgrade : Typetool, Fontographer, Fontlab Studio

blazedout

Hi,

I'm thinking of buying Typetool and then later upgrading to Fontographer or Fontlab Studio.

My first question is if I upgrade from Typetool to Fontographer later then would that mean I have to give up my license for Typetool and no longer be able to use it?

Secondly, I currently use Windows and am thinking of moving to a Mac in the near future. In that case would I have to buy the Mac versions again?

Thanks,
Jason

One: AFIK, no: buying an upgrade doesn't mean you have to trash your old program.

Two: If you've already upgraded to FOG or FL, yes. Check with FontLab to see if you can upgrade cross-platform.

Thanks for the info Nick, so an exchange from PC to Mac isn't possible then? I'll ask Fontlab about the cross-platform upgrade.

It MAY be possible to go from PC to Mac but ask FL for sure.

Thanks for the info guys. I've just posted my question on the Fontlab forum so I'll see what they say regarding an exchange between platforms.

Edit: I think the forum over here is more active then over there so if anyone from Fontlab sees this post then it'll be much appreciated if you could answer my queries.

The build forum is usually frequented by Adam Twardoch but you should be able to send an email to FontLab and get an answer.

In case anyone's looking for the same info this is the reply I got posing the same question to Fontlab,

"You would lose your license to Typetool if you are not an owner of the software.
It is possible to change from one platform to another within a certain amount of
time."

I don't get this. If you weren't the owner in the first place, how would you have a license?

"I don't get this. If you weren't the owner in the first place, how would you have a license?"

That's exactly what I thought Jonathan. I think he meant to say that if you sold it or something?? But that wasn't even part of the question.

I think somebody else might be able to clarify this.
