Same thing here. Seems like the difference increases dramatically as the degree of slant increases. At more typical italic slants (12-15 degrees), it's still there, but just slightly. It may be that the interactive slant tool reports the angle value incorrectly.
I just wanted to give someone a quick idea without creating a ufo. See what happens?

I moused the whole contour at the center of the crossbar and interactively back-slanted 30 something degrees.

After undoing the above, I back-slanted the same 30something degrees typed into the transform palette, selecting also "center of selection".
Am I missing something? Does this happen for others? Is there a preference for windows or mac degrees I'm not aware of? ;)
