Berlin sign painting -industrial

strubleberlin

I was wondering if anyone can ID this font for me. I see it hidden all over Berlin, always painted by hand, and almost always in pre-war industrial settings. The letter forms change from sign to sign but the proportions are generally all the same. There is no digital version to my knowledge. Maybe someone can point me to an old industrial sign painting manual?

»(fette) Steinschrift«. There's a couple of digital versions out there. Akzidenz Grotesk Condensed is pretty close, too.

see here, here, and here. Dieter Steffmann has a (non-condensed) fette Steinschrift as a free download here.

more Steinschriften:

Trump Gothic
Plakette
(Folio BdExCd)
Weber Hausschnitt

Prager Steinschrift, from Kapr, »Schriftkunst« (1976)

AG Hausschnitte, from Kapr, »Deutsche Schriftkunst« (1959)

None of these samples has that lovely bauhaus-esque k, though.

Thanks lindenhayn, I agree it has a lot of similarities to the early grotesks but riccard0 is correct. I have been on this for a while... Unless I totally missed something I am quite sure it is sitting in the back of some technical manual or sign painting book that I do not own. Also has some similarities to early versions of DIN Engschrift if that helps anyone.

The Flickr stream of fellow typophile Nina Stössinger (http://www.flickr.com/photos/ninastoessinger/) has scans of some pages of german lettering manuals, while fellow typophile Florian Hardwig's stream (http://www.flickr.com/photos/hardwig/) has several examples of berliner lettering.

yea, I know... :(

WhatTheFont came up with three fonts that have that kind of k:
http://new.myfonts.com/fonts/imageclub/narrowband-prime/bold/
http://new.myfonts.com/fonts/redrooster/raleigh-gothic-rr/
http://new.myfonts.com/fonts/device/ainsdale/bold/
unfortunately, all the other letters in these three have nothing in common with Brian's samples...

Also, found via the very first link in the thread:
