Typophile

Internship ?

ine beerten

hello everybody,

a few months ago I asked for your help with my graduationproject, a peacefont combining Arabic and Hebrew styles ( http://www.typophile.com/cgibin/discus.pl?pg=prev&topic=4100&page=50579 ). Thanx for all you help, it was a great succes, I graduated in June and my typeface (even though it's not completely finished) has been published in the german Spatium magazine.
Since my graduation I have taken some time off to travel, but I will be back at the end of januari. I would like to start looking for an internship in designing typefaces, typography. I was thinking of an internship of 6 months to a year, anywhere in the world. I feel like I still have a lot to learn about typography (there was only a little part of typography in my course in college), but I'm a fast learner. I have a little portfoliowebsite, nothing too special, but it will give you an idea of my work during college, http://users.pandora.be/inebeerten . It hasn't been updated since I've been travelling so the news-part is probably a little outdated.
Maybe interesting to know, my first languages are Dutch and English, then French and I also speak a little Spanish.

So if anybody has some good ideas on how I could get such an internship or if anybody is looking for somebody to do an internship, please let me know...

thanx,

Ine

Ine, welcome back.
Your work was the most interesting thing in that issue of Spatium (which is saying a lot).
Good luck finding a fulfilling internship.

hhp

Ine, I would encourage you to be very proactive in your search for an internship. Our industry is very small, and you should send letters to everyone.

There are bigger font houses, smaller font houses (sometimes with just one or two people) and graphic design agencies who do typographic work and/or design type, too. I've met people who've interned at, or heard that internships exist, at least all of the following places:

Linotype, Monotype, FontShop, Adobe, DaltonMaag, Xplicit, Meta, Porchez Typofonderie, Luc(as) Fonts, Font Bureau, H&FJ, Gal

Much as we wish it were otherwise, we have no internship opportunities in the type group at Adobe right now (nor in the foreseeable near future).

Best of luck finding something!

Regards,

T

Ine, I'm afraid Tiro doesn't run a regular intern program, although we've taken on people in the past for specific projects (Adam Twardoch spent six months with us a few years ago). I can offer some advice though: be sure to advertise any technical skills you may have (and not just with font software), and also language skills.

We've not been able to get approval for a typography intern in recent years - last one we had here was Andy Crewdson in 2000. But we may be able to open a position for next summer. If so I'll post a note back here. Sadly MS does not accept applications from non-US citizens who are not attending US colleges.

Si

BTW, where the hell is Andy?!

hhp

Si, does Microsoft accept US citizens who are not attending US colleges? Such as Americans at Reading or KABK?

Dan, the info is a bit unclear...

...but that shouldn't stop such a person from applying.

Hrant, as I recall Andy took a job with a publisher. Not heard from him in a while.

Ine, another question that I have for you is what sort of place you'd like to work at, and what exactly you'd like to do (meaning, is your dream job working as a letter drawer in a small type studio, something totally different, etc.).

ok, thank you all.
I will send letters to different fonthouses. Do you think it would be better to send a printed letter with a little printed portfolio? It 's kind of hard for me to do at the moment as I'm travelling, I can only send emails right now. So it would have to wait untill february.
It's also a little hard for me to say what really is my dreamjob. I think it would be really nice to work in a small type studio working as a letter drawer, but I think I would be equally happy to work in a bigger studio as a graphic designer, doing a little bit of typo once in a while... I can't really say which I prefer.

P22 could use an intern right about now.
:^)

Are you interviewing?

As a matter of fact...yes.

Hmm

Richard,
Is it okay if i break the news? ;^D

Ask and ye shall receive

i'll take that as a yes.
thanks for starting this thread, ine, because of it i'll be joining P22 for a while.
i think that qualifies as a "success story" for me, jared & joe.
thanks for everything, typophile!

Congratulations!

T

I'm also looking for an intern...

English is ok, but French is a big plus!

Hurray Paul! Congratulations are definitely in order. Have a wonderful time in Buffalo, or wherever P22 is

Congrats, Paul! Go get 'em.

BTW, I think Ine deserves some credit too.

hhp

Hey Paul, after Ine gets a job we can form a "Typophile-Interns-Network"

Paul has survived his first day at P22. Tomorrow is the obstacle course and hot coal walking event. Should he pass the grueling hazing ceremony, he will be on his way to typographic nirvana.

>Should he pass the grueling hazing ceremony, he will be on his way to typographic nirvana.[..]

Hey ,
I haven't checked this thread for some days (I was travelling). Anyway, I have also found an internship, with Fontshop Berlin ...

thanx for all the advice, it helped me a lot.

Wonderful!
And I was worried that poor Ine triggered Paul's luck but had none herself.

hhp

Congrats Ine! I hope you have as good a time with FontShop as I'm having here at P22. I survived the obstacle course and coal walking yesterday. I wonder what new mischief they have planned for me today. ;^)

Ine, are you working for FontShop Berlin, or for FSI (FontShop International)? I know that they are in the same building, but I'm just curious. Will you be there for a while? If you are still there in May, and get to go to their Typo-Berlin conference, I'd love to meet with you there.

It's a nutritional issue.
You haven't heard of Dr Bombardier's Diet from the Tintin cartoons? Plankton and seawater.

hhp

Exhausted from previous debates with Gerald, and terrified of what the future might bring, I had Adobe advanced technology and special-ops teams kidnap him and replace him with a remarkably convincing android.

Hoping to win his freedom, Gerald signed Lanston over to P22, which he hoped would sufficiently reduce his threat to Adobe without giving the company to us.

We are now considering releasing the real Gerald Giampa (and quietly deactivating the android). Despite Adobe's well-known multinational power, we figure nobody would believe his story anyway....

Regards,

T

Hey Dan, I will work for Fontshop International, I think. And I'll be there for one year, so I should be able to go to Typo Berlin.
So see you there ...

Mr. Phinney,

You at Adobe certainly go about your business with style and grace. I refer to the lovely holographic yacht that was, apparently, supplied for the

FontShop in San Francisco occasionally has internship opportunities. Ine, feel free to send your letter and portfolio via email as an introduction. Send email to internship at fontshop.com.

Wahoo! Go, Paul!!
