Hinting: Italic standard stems

blank

Should italic standard stem values be measured horizontally across the stem or diagonally across the stem at the italic angle?

Neither. You can't hint diagonals, only horizontals and verticals.

So I just provide horizontal values and ignore the verticals?

Right.

Thanks!

Why can't you hint diagonals? If you're manually adding TrueType hinting you can.

Since he was asking about standard stem values, I assumed he was asking about PostScript hints.

Right. I don’t even know enough about TT hints to read the tutorials in the right order.

Another way of putting this is that with PS outlines, all hinting distances are in the X or Y direction, even if the stroke is a diagonal (or a curve).

Hmmm. I thought all PS distances were totally unaware of x or y, stem, ht., counter, sb or temperature. But I'm just judging the results by the input and output because it's a black box of closed source code.
