Alternatives for Meta

mattiman

Looking for a new typeface to use for my webdesign company I found FF Meta to be potentially the right one. It's modern, clean, no-nonsense, but also a bit "creative", has a bit more personality. I use Frutiger now, but I'm kind of bored with it. I like clean typefaces like Helvetica and Frutiger, but it's just a bit too plain.

However, as with many of the "classics", Meta is everywhere! On trucks passing by, on the ad display next to the road, on the local butcher's window, etc.

So looking for alternatives. One I still like is Whitney. However, it's quite expensive and its license seems a bit too restrictive. If I find a typeface I can use on my website (@font-face or typekit) that would be a pre. Otherwise, I would have to create images for the main headlines on the site and use that.

Potential alternatives I have found so far
- ITC Officina Sans. Also by Spiekermann. Modern and versatile, with just some little details that make it less boring.
- FF Milo. At first sight quite plain but also has a few nice details.
- Seravek.

If I'm correct I can use Milo and Seravek in some way with font embedding for the website.

Any other interesting ones? If I would have to describe the ideal typeface, it would be: clean, modern, no-nonsense, friendly

Sensibility by Nick Shinn

Wow, that looks nice. Thanks for the suggestion jean paul

Nice, isn't it? Like Meta, but even more flowing...

Yes indeed. I'm not a graphic designer, so don't know how to describe it exactly, but it has a nice friendly yet professional look. Clean but not "stiff", not too corporate.

Thanks again for this suggestion

what a nice typeface Jean Paul.

I don't think anyone is selling fonts with unlimited web embedding.

FF Legato is available as a web fontfont.

You could ask Nick directly about embedding: http://www.typophile.com/cms/user/2021

"FF Legato is available as a web fontfont."
Where do you see that? I don't think it is.

To the original poster: how about Meta Serif? :)
And it would be useful to know if you're looking for a font for (web) text or just headlines – the former would still limit your practicable choices somewhat.

Well at fontspring

the specific @font-face license can be bought so I assume that's legal. If I'm correct it's the same font but specifically for the web. And so when I want to use the font for print work I will have to buy the regular license as well.

@Nina: I'll want to use the font for both my print work (business card, letter) and maybe some headlines on my website. For regular body text I'll just stick with a normal font (not-embedded) I think.

Not sure about the Meta Serif. Feels somewhat too formal. Not sure how to say it.

My mistake. The google result text made it look like it was.

If you like Meta but find it a bit too quirky you might like its headline version:

Another alternative would be Spiekermann’s FF Unit
http://www.fontshop.com/fonts/downloads/fontfont/ff_meta_headline_ot/

or Ole Schäfer’s great but often forgotten FF Fago:

What about Alber New: http://new.myfonts.com/fonts/moretype/alber-new/

50% discount at the moment.

Please stop with all the good suggestions. Or block my credit card to prevent me from going bankrupt buying all those fonts. Or hand me some new paid projects in which I can use them :)

Seriously: Kievit is definitely very nice. A bit pricy :(
Alber New looks good as well on first impression. Good price now.

In the meantime I bought Sensibility, so for now I'll stick with that. It has a nice personal feel to it. And I like some of the small details like the crossed over w and slight bends on the d and b
(send me to font school to know the right terms)
