font management program

matt yow

just wondering what you guys use to house all your fonts on your computer? I am using the standard ole' Font Book for mac and I know there is a better, more reliable, easier program out there.
thanks!

I was using Fontexplorer X (from Linotype) and it was fantastic. New computer at work is locked down, so I can't reinstall. And at home I use Windows. I've been looking for a home solution, but after using Fontexplorer X, no program I have tried is satisfying.

I've been working on Macs since 91. First mostly with SuitCase, which was all right. Later came ATM which was also ok. But now I find that Mac's standard installed Font Catalog in OSX is pretty awful, so I use FontAgent Pro with much pleasure!

FontAgentPro for the last 8 years, MasterJuggler for a period of 13 years before that. Notice the break on account of the transition to OS X?

Another option is Suitcase Fusion (extensis.com).

@JamesM, I've been looking at that one. It looks awesome but the price tag is a little much for me. Its probably got the value but I don't know if my wallet can take care of that now.

@bert_vanderveen, I guess the same applies. I think all great font management programs are right at $100

Earlier versions of FontExplorerX were freeware — could be that there are some installers around, but could be that the free versions don’t work on OS X (Snow) Leopard.

"but could be that the free versions don’t work on OS X (Snow) "

I'm running the free version on 10.6.4, and it works fine.

I recommend FontExplorer X Pro. Download & try it for free for a month, purchase for $79. I'm hooked because it's been the best experience with autoactivation in CS apps.

If you are feeling brave, compile the source of http://fontmatrix.net - a 1.0 is due out in January and it just had some major work done :)

It will be fully cross platform and have easy installers by January.
