When generating fonts in fontlab I always get this error... WTF is it?

tedbreakmore

[WARNING] The feature file OS/2 overrides TypoAscender and TypoDescender do not sum to the font bbox size!

This means that, in Font Info > Most important font dimensions, the sum of the Ascender and the Descender as a positive number do not total the font's UPM size.

Whats the best way to fix this? Is this because i did not have the scale button checked?

Is this because i did not have the scale button checked?

No: it's because FontLab will generate the error message if the two numbers don't add up to 1,000, in this case. It's just something FontLab does...

If you want to know about this read the typowiki on it. Warning: not fun.

@tedbreakmore

You beat me to it. Thanks. I was going to post this question because I'm getting this message quite frequently also.
It would be nice if the error message was at least grammatical, eh?

I assumed bbox meant the bounding box (see the FL documentation), but this is a per-glyph thing and I couldn't see how one could have ascender/descenders sum to that.

And what happens if you just say, "Hell, screw it. So it doesn't sum to the bbox size. Big deal."
Anything bad? I haven't visually seen any problems as yet.

Thanks for the link, Bill. And what are you talking about - it *is* fun!

The error messages come from the Adobe FDK for OpenType (AFDKO) library that we licensed from Adobe to generate OpenType PS (.otf) fonts. Unfortunately, some of the error messages that library returns are somewhat cryptical.

This might be helpful.
