Six Degrees of Stephen Coles

Jared Benson

In our growing mission to deify Stephen Coles (and to prove he has successfully positioned himself in the center of the typographic universe), does anyone care to play a round of Typographic Degrees of Separation?

Here's an easy one to get started: Connect Stephen Coles to a font named "Superduper" in five (5) steps or less.

one of many sites with an overview on Six Degrees of Kevin Bacon.

http://www-distance.syr.edu/bacon.html

Do I have to be it to start one?

hhp

is this open for everyone?

1. The guy in the photo, Akiem Helmling, won a prize at the 2001 bukva:raz! type design competition.
2. Lars Bergquist won a prize at the 2001 bukva:raz! type design competition.
3. Lars Bergquist has a half dozen typefaces that are sold through PsyOps.
4. RXC is the founder of PsyOps.

i smell a technicality coming...

Let me, please!!

hhp

Go ahead Hrant. You must have a difficult one.

Connect a French mathematician/philosopher to a lumberjack in four (4) steps.

Notes:
1) The steps are indeed all directly type/graphic_design-related.
2) I'll give a clue at 4:15 PST if nobody has it.

hhp

Hint:
Step 3 was "in the news" 3 days ago.

hhp

Hmmm...

1. Rene Font has the same name as Rene Descartes.

2. Rene Font is published by URW

3. URW also publishes URW Wood Type.

4. Wood type fonts were originally made of wood, which is cut down by a lumberjack.

Wasn't it, probably, but it's a shot nonetheless.

start with Pascal...???

end with Excoffon, who once worked as a lumberjack.**

**just kidding about Excoffon.

What news? Real news...or, uh, type news?

Dave, that's pretty creative! Although to me step 3 would be too much of a stretch (just like BJ's step 2 to Stephen's one). But I guess if nobody gets it for real by 4:30 PST you're it.

BJ:
1) Good start.
2) John Butler's news.

hhp

French math == pascal

pascal font from Jose Mendoza Almeida

Student of Almeida was Thierry Puyfoulhoux,

Thierry cut logs to get through college.

bj

Almost there!

1) Pascal was designed by Jose Mendoza y Almeida.
2) Thierry Puyfoulhoux was a student of Mendoza at the Imprimerie Nationale.
3) Puyfoulhoux revived a Cassandre font.
4) The work which launched Cassandre's poster career was "Bucheron" = lumberjack.

--

I think BJ is it after all!

hhp

Okay, I'll come up with one...lemme see...un momento por favor.

Connect a book publisher, Mitchell Kennerley, with the number 666.

bj

yes, Hrant has the inside track on this one. Won't be back online until tonight to post an answer.

Bezier was a French mathematician, no?

one hint: famous designers, famous columns...

I'll post the answer in a few hours.

bj

Well, I can see this place has turned completely recreational, once again. How long did that take? Can you guess that in six? Can anyone point me to a serious list on typography and type design? Signing out.

spoil sport

Jared -- on the right track. Perhaps do a search here (at typophile) for Person 666.

Goudy is the correct first link.

Look at the names of Goudy's typefaces, too.

bj

1. Kennerly > Goudy
2. Goudy > typeface Goudy Trajan
3. Trajan by Carol Twombly.
4. Twombly's Trajan > in the Linotype library
5. Maral > in the Linotype library
6. Maral is a typeface from Hrant Papazian, Person No. 666 at Myfonts.com

bj

Something a little trickier, I think.

Connect Stephen Coles to the marvellous drinking hole, Vrankrijk ( http://www.vrankrijk.org/ ).

:-)

Oh, BJ, you <i>remembered<i>! :-)
BTW, Laurence Penney assures me it was a coincidence... Yeah, right. ;-)

hhp

>Connect a French mathematician/philosopher to a lumberjack in four (4) steps.

I'm a little late to the party, but . . . Hrant, how's this for an alternate route:

1) Ren

Oh, well done Kent: bonus marks to anyone who knows Ren

Kent, that's great!
Have we given up on David's? :-(

hhp

So David, what's the connection??

And is Kent next?

hhp

Porky -- a quick google on Vrankrijk left me stranded here.

www.punk.nu/nosex/

Look at the catchy song titles.

We're writhing in agony already. Throw us a bone.

Too easy Jared.

1_ Stephen co-founded Typographica

2_ One of Stephen's cohorts at Typographica is Patric King.

3_ Patric King designed Apocalipstick

4_ Apocalipstick is distributed through Thirstype.

5_ Thirstype also distributes Superduper.

The winner was Joe, who successfully proved the relationship. BJ, you were close, but you were missing some basic steps (ie. mentioning Typographica)

sorry, but "good friend of" isn't a strong enough connection.

Joe, you're up! Make the next challenge.

Bam. Snaked by BJ.

Here's a harder one:

Connect the typeface Officina with the former Talking Heads lead singer David Byrne in 5 steps.

I can do it in 4, I think.

1. Officina was designed by Erik Spiekermann
2. Spiekermann founded FontShop
3. FontShop created the photo stock collection FStop
4. David Byrne has photos in the FStop collection

I bet there's another set of steps that works here too.
Something with Tibor Kalman and Talking Heads or so.

BTW, I may be somewhere near the "center of the
typographic universe" but I have no control of it
whatsoever. I am ducking and taking cover while I
watch everything fly by.

Nice. Stephen, you're it!

Yes, Hrant. You have to answer this one correctly...

Connect RXC to the man in this photo in fewer than 6 steps.

Of course!

Hehe. No, that is excellent, BJ. I was thinking of a much
more obscure chain:

1. RXC is the founder of PsyOps.
2. PsyOps sells fonts by Tomi Haaparanta.
3. Haaparanta is a Finnish type designer.
4. Helmling and Underware just held a type workshop
in Finland last year.

Hahah! It's Hrant as a little kid!

Does this have anything to do with Monty Python?

Give us something tangible to start with?

In other words, start here: http://typographi.ca/2003_01_31.php#000497

Here goes nothing....

1. Mitchell Kennerley commissioned Frederic Goudy to create "Kennerley Oldstyle"

2. Goudy also designed "Deepdene" for the Lanston Monotype Machine Company.

3. When Simon & Shuster issued their edition of The Bible as Living Literature they used 14pt Deepdene and its italics.

4. The number 666 is found in the Bible.

Well, I for one am stumped. Do we need to work this one out together? I barely even know where to start.

Stephen is "partners in type" sorta/kinda with Patric King, who is a good friend of Magnus Rakeng, creator of Superduper.

http://www.melkeveien.no/magnus-rakeng/

1) what do I win 2) did I cheat?

:-)
