Oxbodkins – terrific replies! What I wanted to say is that there probably aren’t any proper (and common) animal names starting with umlauts. Äffle is a little ape, Öchsle – as Nina explained – a little Ox. The Öchsle is a narrow gauge railway that ends in Ochsenhausen. Überich is a German word, but it is neither an animal nor masculine. Although I can imagine it to be one, some creature living in the forest around Überlingen.
I can see the headline… «Freud has field day in Überlingen.»
A forest full of superegos!

BTW, the House Industries alphabet blocks are a great gift too. I bought the Girard blocks (link) for some friends recently; their eldest kid (then 5) loved them, looked at all the different lettershapes in detail, built all sorts of words, and now says things like «hey, this book has a similar font to this other book, but here it looks nicer». :-)
