hell’s turned over… think different my arse…

This is a great article! Who wrote that. I wish there would be more such corporate history write-ups to peruse

I went and fixed a few bits, btw.

You too eh, Thomas?

I simply couldn’t allow a couple of things to remain unclarified.

>Yeah, I know. I just wondered if there was an “originator” who should receive credit

Actually, I wrote about 90% of it, over the course of a month or so. I’m really happy you like it! It’s been well-received all over the typography web, it seems.

It still has some incomplete sections, but it is rapidly approaching the suggested maximum length of Wikipedia articles. I plan to complete the remaining bits and apply to have it featured on Wikipedia’s first page (nominate it to become a so-called “featured article”).

It has really awakened my interest in typography. I’m by no means an expert, but I’ve made sure all my claims are carefully supported in the references section. Naturally any professional input that you people can add is _greatly_ appreciated. Also, consider helping me identify the font used in Apple’s forgotten and ancient logo on the font identification board:

David, great effort.
The one -unfortunate- thing you might consider adding in there is Apple’s precipitous fall of late, in terms of the dubious pedigree of its recent mass-offerings of fonts; not to mention things like the ethical shakiness of the Chalkboard* typeface. Seeing how well the ambivalence towards ITC Garamond has been handled in the article, I’m very hopeful for a balanced -but candid- text.

Hrant: Interesting.

I am working on compiling a complete list of the typfecase included with Mac OS X. So far, I’ve investigated 10.0, 10.1 and 10.2. I’ve still got Panther to go.

What’s curious, is that I haven’t bumped into “Chalkboard” yet. Comic Sans MS, however, is still included.

I remember when I beta-tested Panther, that the MS web fonts were not installed when once chose to disable Internet Explorer in the installation. Perhaps they included Chalkboard instead, then…If it’s there, I’ll find it…

What do you mean by “mass-offerings” of fonts, by the way? I think most of the fonts included with OS X are of exceptionally high quality, and licensed from respected vendors such as Zapfino and Optima from Linotype. And Apple’s own AAT fonts, such as Apple Chancery are pretty nice too, aren’t they?

Speaking of Comic Sans MS…Apple Casual is sort of similar in its style. What is your opinion on that typeface? (Sample below, and in the article). It is only used by Inkwell.

Those huge bundles of fonts created by third-parties, I presume, but sold through Apple. Although dumping the MS core fonts and replacing them with inferior copies is probably worse.

AppleCasual versus ComicSans versus Chalkboard:
To me the latter two look much closer to each other than either to the first — if that makes sense. :-)

Which ones don’t you like?

Apple Casual is the outline version of the Casual bitmap font included on the Newton.

God I always wanted a newton :sigh: Stupid Jobs.

… And it was probably included to go with Inkwell, the Newton’s handwriting recognition software — the later, good one, not the early, butt-of-many-jokes version — now part of Mac OS X.

Edit: Of course I skipped by the post that already mentioned this.

Here you go Chris. Dive in, the water’s great!

Hrant: I wasn’t aware that Apple sells huge bundles of fonts. Where did you get that information?

As far as I know, Apple hasn’t acted as a font vender since 1993, when it released the Apple Font Pack (mostly ITC TrueType fonts).

Of course one can buy fonts from the AppleStore, but those are no different from any other third-party product.

There is also Apple — Fonts — Buy which has been “Coming Soon” in Zapfino since 2001.

It’s tempting Grant, but I’d probably never use it. And :hangs head: if I did get a PDA I think I’d get a modern one.

The Apple Fonts Store has been coming soon since Jan 2000 — http://www.microsoft.com/typography/links/news.aspx?NID=1093

But I think Hrant is talking about this…

Simon, nope, that’s not it — it’s not dubious enough. ;-)
I’ve been trying to find a link for what I remember, but can’t. So I provisionally withdraw that comment until/unless I can remember what I was remembering. :-/
I sound like Leonard Cohen now… Cool.

Not this one…

related to this thread?

If anything I think Apple may have helped the vendor decide to ‘suspend’ the release of these packs.

Yes! All of the above. Thanks Simon.

If so, good news.
Sentence… suspended!

Simon: “The Apple Fonts Store has been coming soon since Jan 2000” — no it hasn’t. The “Buy fonts” button or menu item has always been there, but it has always pointed to an inactive site.

Yes it has — I was talking about Steve Job’s quote made in Jan 2000 (see the link)

“he said that if you clicked on it, you would be taken to a web site that would allow you to buy download and install fonts automagically”

Cheers, Si

Simon: That quote is from January 2000 and is in reference to a developer preview release of Mac OS X. OS X was released in March 2001, and the Buy Fonts feature was still present — but it has never linked to any active site. It has not been possible to use it as a venue for purchasing fonts.

Dan — A wiki is often authored by various contributors,
as evidenced by the additions by Grant and Thomas.
I have mixed feelings about the anonymity of the authors.
With only the IP noted, there are no name credits, but
perhaps that inspires group participation and reduces
egoist writing.
