Does anyone know if the size of spaces (ie. spacebar keystroke) can be altered in Indesign & can this be programmed into the type formating style?

It's a Paragraph setting; change in your style(s), or immediately using the Paragraph panel:
-- change the Word Spacing: Desired value to what you need.
