Trapping in Illustrator cs3 for print

kelt101

I am on a mac and have cs3 illustator
I have this 2 letter gray and black logo.
I want to trap it. So the gray is overlapping the black.
I took it into illustrator ... selected both letters.. went to pathfinder palette... selected trap on side menu....
pathfinder trap - thickness .25 pts, height - 100%, tint reduction 40% and pressed ok. it did a lil trap but i need a bigger one on the gray letter. what can i do?

If the gray is a percentage tint of black, you don't need to trap it. If the gray is a separate/PMS color, why not make the D 100% black + 100% PMS color? Then you wouldn't need to trap, either...

hmm. well the D is 100% black and the B is a pms spot color. my pressman needs trap cause when i send the logo to press it wont trap enough.

"make the D 100% black + 100% PMS color"

Would that be done with two stacked D-s and multiply?

The colors are both 100% black and pms 486 gray. It needs trapping. is there a way in illustrator?

Add a stroke to your PMS 486 the size requested by your printer for the trap. (Remember that the stroke is only half hanging off your shape, so double the thickness of the outline, or set the stroke to 'outside'). Then outline the stroke: object>path>outline stroke. Now duplicate your black object, bring it to the top of the stack, use it to divide the outline (just the outline, using the pathfinder tool), and erase the parts that do not overlap the black. Now you have the trap.

ok i guess that will work. thank you

The colors are both 100% black and pms 486 gray

PMS 486 is red.

Duplicate the D, set the PMS color to overprint...

I think it is the printers problem,
sorry, might sound a bit blunt but
otherwise you have to adjust your
logo for every printer you are using.

Usually the printers have software
like Heidelberg's pdf toolbox
or Trapwise which will do the job
for you

Do you use Indesign at all?
There is an easy trick do get
a trapped PDF.

thank you all. i will discuss with my printer and boss

well i am at a the actual printer. We got this artwork from someone. I feel Neive anyway but my pressman is no help apparently. is there a setting in indesign or quark i can set this logo to trap as i posted it. or should i just go into illustrator then bring to indesign?

Agostini what is this trick you speak of?????
