It's a bit more complicated than that.... A *properly made* OpenType CFF (.otf) font works fine on Mac and Windows. But fundamentally, you can't be sure you have reliable cross-platform fonts without all the relevant platforms to test on. There are some fields in the font that are only relevant on one platform or the other.

Is it just one font, or an entire family?

On a good day, I might offer to take a look, but I'm moving this week, so that would be foolish of me.

Working in both Mac and PC environment and using FontLab 5.
Send one of the supposedly non-working fonts over, and I'll take a look!

I do recommend sending the whole family, because certain problems emerge at the family level. Though if NONE of the fonts can be activated, it probably isn't that class of problem.

Running CompareFamily and Font Validator is also a good idea, although it takes some experience and expertise to know what to do with the results.

The problem might be caused by the entries in the ‘name’ table. At the other hand, if the TTF variant(s) work(s) properly, this is less likely.

For checking the ‘name’ records, you can download the free Light version of DTL OTMaster at http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/development_tools/dtlotmaster.html and run the OTF Consistency Checker on the name entries. Furthermore, you can use the OTF Consistency Checker to diagnose some other table entries also.

If you think you are going to be continuing to design typefaces, it is a worthwhile investment to learn how to use these sorts of tools. OTMaster, Font Validator, CompareFamily... all handy things. Frank, does the OTF Consistency Checker do most of what CompareFamily does?

To be honest, I have actually no idea what CompareFamily does. The OTF Consistency Checker compares the entries in the ‘name’ table against the specs.

Ah. CompareFamily does some of that, but also checks members of a family for internal consistency, and includes things such as GDI-related limitations on which usWeightClass values can be style-linked to each other, etc. Seems like both would be useful, then.

Thanks again for your support. I tried Consistency checker and solved a little problem in the name entries. I also tried FontQA, which showed me a couple of errors, but to be honest, I'm not sure how to interpret that info (FontQA Report-> files.me.com/juergenfrost/8xpd2o )

You need the 'fontQA.xsl' stylesheet to view the report as html in a browser. But anyway - I have done so and can't see any problems which should hinder the font to work on windows. I think we need the font itself to find the source of the problem.
