Hello all.

I was wondering if anyone could identify the font type on the Calgary 1988 Winter Olympics logo. It appears to be very similar to Helvetica Condensed Black but the "C" seems more oval to me.

Thanks in advance!

Strange - I live in Calgary, and most of the Calgary '88 stuff I've seen is set in Univers, not Helvetica. Where did you find this sample?

Lex:

That’s the Wikipedia reproduction of the logo.
Wikipedia isn’t that particular about logos, especially typefaces used in logos.

See also the “Apollo I” patch using some typeface that looks suspiciously close to Tahoma or Verdana:

The current Wikipedia version of the logo was made by me, yesterday, overlaid to an original image that is the exact same displayed in the IOC website. I just decided to use Helvetica Condensed Black for now and gave a more rounded look to the "C". In the meantime, if you guys can identify the original font, I can update the current image.

Lex: Univers? The lower-case "y" does not have a curved tail in that font type.

The IOC website might be using a re-creation as well. What I've seen around town in the past 20 years has mostly been Univers.

This image (from the official report) confirms it's not Helvetica...

But the "a" is not Univers, am I wrong?

Here, found a better image. The "8" appear to be custom drawn, but Identifont and WhatTheFont suggest me Futura for "Calgary"...

Yep, looks a lot like Futura.

Interesting, I just googled for "calgari 88" pics, and it seems that some people already “borrowed“ your wikipedia version of the logo. So in a way, you’re rewriting design history…
