Greatest Jerseys of All Time

Nick Shinn

Lots of magnificent shots of hockey sweaters with awesome vintage graphics.

My favourite: Trail Smoke Eaters 1938-39.
Close second: Seattle Metropolitans, 1923-24 (shown on cover).

I’ll have to pick that up. I am a little surprised that a hockey magazine called them jerseys, tho.

The old sweater vs jersey debate. The Seattle sweater is from the season the team folded. Sadly i'm doubtful Seattle will win another Stanley cup in my lifetime.

That's easy if you don't have a team.
The Leafs are doing it the hard way.

sii - are those for real? Wow. I thought some of my stuff was atrocious. :)

I think most of the are real - seen them in other lists. But the Huricanes shirt does look fake :-)

I have to admit to nostalgia for the old Canucks sweater shown on the ugliest jersey site to which Si linked. It made the entire team look like extras in a Buck Rogers episode.

Oh, you meant a different kind of Jersey…

There is indeed no unanimity in Canadian English about hockey jersey (cf. “third jersey”) vs. hockey sweater (cf. classic animated short film The Sweater). I think material of construction is important. Classic Canadiens jerseys are really sweaters. 1990s Phoenix Coyotes sweaters, which were an absolutely amazing example of 3D graphic design, were really jerseys.
