What are these good for?

  • U+01B5 LATIN CAPITAL LETTER Z WITH STROKE
  • U+01B6 LATIN SMALL LETTER Z WITH STROKE

I always thought the barred "z" was just a stylistic variant, but since they have Unicode points, do they carry some sort of meaning?

1927–1940? Oh, how very necessary. Thanks :)

The barred 'z' is used in transliterating Chechen & Ingush, which are usually written in Cyrillic. The letter represents the sound of 's' in 'pleasure'.

…just a stylistic variant…

Just a stylistic variant? Stylistic variance is the best reason to keep making new type!

Strabismus: Thanks! That's useful to know.

"Stylistic variance is the best reason to keep making new type!"
Yeah, but maybe not the best/only reason to add another "z".

I believe the polish z-with-dot (ż) is written as a barred z in some (older) fonts/scripts, sometimes.
