Univers vs Utah

Alex Pankratov

Am I seeing things or are these two awfully similar ?

Univers:

Utah:

Not identical as there are some minute differences as in lowercase 'n', but still...

Where is this lowercase n? Spurs on a, b, g, q seem more 'spurry' but that is hardly a change.

When I see a font named after a place, I expect it to be a clone of something else. Apple started it all with their city fonts, and then Corel took it to a whole new level. I'd never name a font after a location.

Corel took it to a whole new level

I would have said Bitstream, which called its unlicensed copy Zurich.

According to this link it says Monotype Design Studio.

Monotype has developed lots of knockoffs over the years. Ever try comparing Palatino with Book Antiqua?

Not all fonts named after places are bogus:

Aachen
Berkeley
Broadway
Caledonia
Canterbury
Charleston
Cheltenham
Deepdene
Dorchester Script
Eldorado
Fairfield
Guildford Sans
Kaatskill
Karnak
Kingston
London Script
Memphis
Murray Hill
Newport
Offenbach
Oxford
Park Avenue
Plymouth
Runnymede
Torino
Venezia
Verona
Washington
Whitehall

Doesn't "Helvetica" basically mean "Swiss?" Okay, a bit of a stretch.

Nice list Mark!

Helvetia means Swiss. And yeah Mark, there are a lot of legit place fonts. How many of them were created post 1985?

The faces in the list all started in metal (some never went beyond it).

Technically, Helvetia means 'Switzerland' while Helvetica means 'Swiss'. Which raises the question, are place name fonts more legitimate if they are 1. adjectives? 2. Latin? 3. Latin adjectives?

Is Albany (also in the "Monotype Originals" series) a takeoff on another font?

Oops: Aachen didn't start out in metal and neither did Berkeley Old Style, although it was based on a metal face which was also named after a place (University of California Old Style).

It seems to me like a Univers version of "helvetica-Arial" parody.

You forgot Gotham Mark. Home of the bat

Yes, of course. I was trying to think of older fonts, before the DTP era, so I'm sure I left out a lot of more recent ones.

Alphaville, home of Alpha-60.

Maybe we could introduce a new term for these rip-offs? I would suggest Arial-isation, fonts that have been arialised... Any better ideas? ;-)

Albany reminds me a lot of Akzidenz Grotesk, not quite but close.
