Trouble with possible phallic logo

cpaluch04

I have been working on a freelance project for a close friend of mine. She’s starting up her own small local record label. Only problem is that out of the sketches that I showed her, this was the one that she happened to like. Three weeks later I notice that it looks phallic. Anyone have any ideas? The name of the record label is Black Catalyst Records. Long text to work with. Yet another design challenge.

I do not see a phallus just a poorly executed b!

Edit: I do not mean that in a mean way... just that the b looks more like an h, sort of.

Michael

The font that I am using is Adobe Garamond. I understand what you mean about the b looking like an h. I’m just concerned because it’s going to be put on a business card, exchanged, looked at various angles, etc.

Maybe what I am saying is that it struggling to be a b.

Michael

You could push it and see the sexuality but it is certainly not a smack me over the head obvious image.

Michael

It might be a little too broken apart to get the sense of a b. Thanks for the input Michael!

Maybe shorten the stem of the ’b’ so it rises just barely above the bowl.

I agree with Michael about the ’b’ being “off”. I think you should either chop up a real ’b’ instead of using a flipped ’c’, or else rotate the ’c’ 180 degrees instead of flipping it.

I was attempting to manipulate the curves just as in how a guitar body.

I’ll definitely attempt that and see how it works. Thanks Lex.

Just keep at it... you will resolve it in time.

Michael

Here it is with the changes. I do like reducing the ascender of the d which will make it a lot easier for me to work with placing it with text. The curves added with the original letter b give more motion as well.

The version with taller ascender, I see a musical note...possibly...just food for thought?

I prefer the long stem version better. I find it pleasantly “glyphic”.
I wouldn’t worry too much about it being phallic: if you look for enough time at any given symbol, at the end you can always find out some sexual innuendo! ;-)

Cheers, db.

You could try squaring it up with some harder edges. Take out the soft organic lines and it would look less phallic.

Jac
“pronounced by saying ’Jake’ without conjuring imagery of lumberjacks or mans best friend.”

It’s a decent enough idea, and I don’t see a problem. Revisit Lex’s comments. Mirroring the c is causing the b to look bad, the additional little rotation is not helping — just falling over. Start by rotating 180 only, and redrawing as needed, but keeping the same angle of modulation (thick/thin flow).

The *ahem* head serif on the b could be given more emphasis to the left and jac’s suggestion of hard edges would completely remove any anatomical reference.

db thanks for the laugh.

I am also seeing ’cb’ rather than ’bc’.

And providing that ’records’ is indicating a musical relation...I think you should really test out the music note idea.

That is just me though.

What kind of music is she going to put out?

She’s starting out with more of a alternative rock clientele and trying to stem out from that. She wants a versatile group of local bands so she wants to not be niche specific.
