So this is for a title plus text? Or just display?
Do the small caps need to be bold too?

Display... a (potential) logo.

So the small caps would need to be in the same weight, yes.

I don't mind at all doing grunt work to find such fonts...but I don't know any off the top of my head that come with small caps, to start with!

And everyone here is so good at suggestions.

This also leads to the question, Why is it I never seem to see Sans-Serifs with Small Caps?

They exist. Whitney by H&FJ and Avenir Next by Linotype all have small caps. In fact, a good number of new(er) Sans Serifs usually include small caps and old style figures.

As for your font, you could try Trade Gothic (or if you have lots of money, Benton Sans, or alternatively, one of the other "gothics" ie. News or Franklin) or Akzidenz Grotesk. Both have straight leg 'R's, and at bold weight, look pretty robust.

Hi Evan, I'm not totally sure what you mean by "with a punch" but have a look at Klavika.

I would guess the lack of small caps in sans typefaces is because historically long lengths of text were typically set in serif type.

Not sure about the “punch” factor, but Lucas De Groot’s The Sans has a straight “R” leg, small caps, old-style numerals and ranges from extra light to black.

A couple other options...

Apex New

Section

DSType has a number of 'heavy' sans-serif typefaces that come with small caps. Plexes Pro being one of a handful.

DSType

Note: Peek in the mini sample to the right to see which have small caps... most are included in the weight and not separate.

the same old tired suggestions...how boring

i think you are all shills for the type designers... same old same old stuff

Farquart, if you have any other suggestions let's hear them. By the way, I have no connection whatsoever to any of the foundries I mentioned.

I'm not a type designer..not everyone here is.. And while we're at it..let's not ridicule their profession. What's wrong with a simple suggestion?

I guess by punch I mean it should have a touch of attitude...worthy of the word revolution.

But it can also be the weight that accomplishes that.

I've found Benton Sans, Whitney, & The Sans to be good directions.
It's a little annoying you can't see what the small caps look like for the last two..

how does one make a decision without seeing the type set the way you want it?

and yes that was a little uncouth of lord farquat..but if you've seen shrek, what do you expect?

You can see and 'Test Drive' the small cap versions of Whitney on the H&FJ site.

And The Sans on the FontShop site.

Evan,

is this revolutionary enough?

farquart, I think it depends on how those fonts are used like any extra stuff added to it like stroke, position, dirt, color, etc

I've seen "boring" fonts tweaked to the point they arent boring at all, I just wish I could pull it off

Alright Sans has a straight-leg R, small caps, and weights up to Ultra Bold.

Amplitude in the Ultra weight, but no small caps.

What sort of Revolution are you trying to illustrate with the typography?

A punch to the head? A punch to the gut? A strike to the groin?

How about Dez Squeeze?

http://new.myfonts.com/fonts/dezcom/dez-squeeze/

ChrisL

I'm thinking Revolution 9, courtesy of the Beatles. I'm not looking for pop-art fonts (not that you guys and gals would even suggest it!)

Something that says, "what I can do for you will be new, memorable, & noteworthy."

Sorry for the image quality--but the two iStockphoto ads at the beginning of the new Comm Arts mag have some nice typesetting that I think might do. That upsidedown R looks perfect (minus the weird filigree they added).

Alright isn't shabby.
Amplitude is too techy & modern.
Dez Squeeze certainly has a punch but it's letterforms aren't quite what I'm looking for, plus it wouldn't retain legibility at small sizes with those tiny counters.

Here are some more with smallcaps:

ChrisL

ouch!

Maybe Brothers-Bold? Its straight lines give
it a serious look. And IIRC it has an alt "R"
you might like.

hhp

How about National by Kris Sowersby?

[edit] never mind, I'm a bit slow today.

>ouch!

is that at me? what?...it looks to be a display face!

I believe the ouch was directed at me, but I'm not sure.

I would look at Graphik. Straight legged R, punchy and very contemporary.

Graphik is really nice, i must say. But still not available for licensing yet?

ouch was directed at me... all of those punchy choices just got the better of me.

Left hook caught James on the chin :-)

ChrisL

You can't really have a punchy font without ball terminals.

hhp

I guess Hrant is saying it takes balls to be a boxer :-)

Contact Commercial Type directly about Graphik!

All these puns flying about no one's suggested Knockout?

Here's a visual aid. Most of these have been suggested. The bottom one is a free font, so it only has A-Z uppercase.

Hmm, these aren't very punchy and/or daring, are they.  :-\
Especially that bottom one looks very [present-day] German. "OK, let us revolt! But only during office hours! And make sure the commute is paid for."

I keep thinking of Eagle, except that doesn't have smallcaps.
Hey, how revolutionary/punchy/wild are smallcaps, anyway?

EDIT: Thinking of German/Russian/Constructivist, maybe look at Iwan Reschniev.

Thank you Ed for the visual.

I did think Graphik had a certain flair to it.

And there might be somethin' to the Alright Sans as well.

Anways, it's on the basis of a typographic design that I would need small caps. I'ld like the R in normal caps, the rest in small caps. And possibly some combination of that as the R in italic caps, the rest in small caps. Or vice versa.

It's really unfortunate that I can't create the design at this time because it's sort of for a future project i hope to do, and also, i don't have the funds at the moment for the fonts! Hope you all don't hate me for that!

Nevertheless this has been a nice way to be turned on to some new faces I've never seen before. My list of must-haves is growing...

I keep thinking of Eagle, except that doesn’t have smallcaps.

@ altaira:

You dismiss the DIN-knock-off and recommend a geometrically constructed typeface?
Uhmmm...

I would call DIN Engschrift THE punchy typeface, even though I agree it’s not exactly “daring”. What leads us to the question how “daring” something labeled with the term “revolution” really has to look like nowadays...

Thinking about it, setting REVOLUTION in DIN Engschrift adds an interesting layer to this rather beaten term, don’t you think?
Or how about Arial! That would be daring, in a way... and hey! - it’s for free ;)

Cheers,

Günni

Block Berthold comes to mind, no smallcaps though... But a lot of punch!

Same goes for Linotype Spitz

Champion or Knockout would also fit the bill I think.

"You dismiss the DIN-knock-off and recommend a geometrically constructed typeface?"
Yes.
It's not just about tangible formal principles; fonts evoke cultural contexts.
DIN (and its knockoffs) say standardization, bureaucracy, rules, norms –
that's the context DIN was developed in/for. Iwan Reschniev stems from Tschichold's New Typography, a strongly ideological movement (plus its constructivist approach, to me, links back to Russian propaganda æsthetic,
which no doubt is a "revolutionary" context).

"Thinking about it, setting REVOLUTION in DIN Engschrift adds an interesting layer to this rather beaten term, don’t you think?"
I was under the impression that the original poster wants a font that speaks in unison with the content, not one that adds a sneakily dissonant second layer.

How come no one has already suggested Rhode (http://www.fontbureau.com/fonts/Rhode) ? One of the punchiest typefaces ever, IMHO.

@ alteira:

Sneaking dissonance is what keeps things interesting in life, isn’t it?
I wasn’t talking solely about formal principles.
Even though its forerunners were older, the history of DIN is in fact connected to bauhaus and its constructivist proponents. And tschichold himself, in his early years, was a dogmatist and a proponent of standardization, rules and norms. Which, of course, doesn’t exclude his work from being revolutionary.

How about Renner’s Steile Futura?
http://www.fontbureau.com/fonts/sans/Tasse
http://new.myfonts.com/fonts/berthold/steile-futura-bq/

"Sneaking dissonance is what keeps things interesting in life, isn’t it?"
Well, that's not up to you and me to decide in this case, but the typographer in charge, who asked quite clearly for recommendations. I understood he wanted a punch, not a sneak. :)
I'm aware of the overlap/blur between constructivism seen as revolutionary, and modularity seen as stifling and monotonous – super-interesting stuff actually. Tschichold's own change of stance in this regard is maybe the best proof of this.
But there is still a difference in freshness to my understanding, in (historical) edginess; wouldn't you agree that it'd be equally unfitting to see DIN on Russian Constructivist posters as it would be to see Iwan Reschniev on traffic signs?
But maybe everyone "draws the line" somewhere else in this case.

And some people consider even DIN on traffic signs to be unfitting ;)

Don’t want to distract from the original topic.

But since the original poster sneaked away a couple of posts earlier I feel we’re punching a dead horse here anyway, altaira.

I think for something to look truly revolutionary, it should not be a typeface but hand drawn or at least something like "Solidarity" from years gone buy.

ChrisL

Günni – If a horse's innards are interesting to read, there's really nothing to be said against punching a dead one. :-)
Anyway, sorry. As you were.

Chris, really?
Must revolution be clumsy?
