Palm Springs Style Book Typeface

James Trump

The font is used inside the book also. I thought at first glance it was Engravers Gothic but with closer inspection, it clearly isn't, it’s not Blair or Gotham either. Any help would be really appreciated!

NB. This looks very similar to the font that Chanel uses

Looks like Gotham from Hoefler & FJ.

(edit: Ooops! Wrong M and you already said it wasn't Gotham. Must read whole post...)

It almost looks like an extended version of Proxima Nova S. But that doesnt exist.

I thought it could be Copperplate Gothic with the serifs removed, but the A and M vertices aren't right.

yeh, looks like copperplate, if not a very close variant

I'm sorry, but I am coming back to the Gotham idea. I think the M was changed (or substituted), but to me the rest matches Gotham as far as I can tell. That G, S and R seem spot on, although my eyes are not as calibrated as some here. What do you think Jan?

The Palm Springs Style book was published in 2005. I'm almost certain this is an actual font rather than a manipulated Gotham, Proxima Nova, Engravers Gothic, Trade Gothic Extended or Copperplate.

Below is another image of what I believe could be the same font used elsewhere. I'll also scan in pages from the Palm Springs Style book which uses the font for headings and the introduction.

The introduction to the Palm Springs Style book:

Is it possible that this is a small-caps variant and that's what's throwing us off?
(Notice the height of the hyphen.)
Gotham doesn't have SC, does it?

The sample above reminds me of this unidentified font from a post earlier this week:

I went to the Commonwealth Utilities website and saw that they used a similar
font in their nav. I downloaded the flash .swf and tried to open it and was told by
flash that there was a missing font: Chanel Gras c21 et Plus. I searched for a
font by that name but came up with nothing in Google. Maybe that was an error
in the Flash application. It does look like the typeface used by Chanel on their website.

It's strange that the typeface is used in several different places and none of us know what it is?

I read that Chanel had a custom face for the brand, but the Commonwealth Utilities and the typefaces above look very similar.
Weird that flash pulled up the name Chanel Gras c21 et Plus - they could be owned by the same company?

I'm pretty sure now it's an actual font and as eliason said it is a small-caps variant.

The nav in Commonwealth's swf uses an actual font, the system had changed it to Arial when I opened it. Flash told me the Chanel font was missing. I agree that it doesn't make sense that this book and Commonwealth Utilities would be using Chanel's proprietary font. I was just reporting what I found as I looked into this. Maybe that type error is concidental and it's not the Chanel font.

Here is a view of the 'Chanel-Gras' font embedded in the Commonwealth Utilities website.

I wish something like that was available for purchase. I prefer some of the letter forms, the S, R,G, etc., to those in Engravers/Sackers/Blair Gothic.

Here is a look at the 'Chanel Gras De C0 A C10' font from the Chanel website.

It looks like http://www.chandeliercreative.com/ created the branding for Commonwealth Utilities. It features more of the font here.

I agree i much prefer some of the letter forms of this mystery font to Engravers etc.

I find it really strange that searching for Chanel Gras C21 Et Plus pulls nothing up in Google? It currently feels like someone has custom made the font and only shared it with a small number of people rather than putting it for sale?

I did a quick google search and didn't come up with any information that said Commonwealth is related to Chanel. It's possible that this wasn't shared, but that someone who may have worked at Chanel borrowed it (took it with them when they left, or freelanced on a Chanel project etc.). I have a couple of proprietary corporate typefaces that were custom made for client projects (like the GE font). There is a similar thread between these projects/samples in that these are all related to style/fashion.

I agree Minimalista this probably is the case. What I can't understand is if Chanel did have it custom designed and made, how the hell can other people get away with using it, especially Commonwealth Utilities where it is a major part of the brand.

Maybe Chanel isn't aware that Commonwealth is using the font.

I'm going to further investigate this

I found in an old typophile thread that Chank had designed a similar font, Katwalk, based on the logo. But for some reason its no longer available.

Thanks for the good work CreativeNRG, I had no idea that kind of thing was possible. Doesn't the Chanel typeface look great.

It looks like Eurostile Bold Extended.

Thanks, I think Eurostile has more straight egdes than the Chanel font.

I love to know what font that is... it is very similar to this one, which I found in checkland-kindleysides portfolio for Bentley Motors. It's probably proprietary, but I would love to know of anything you find that is close.

It looks like someone at Assouline has the typeface. They produced a book for Chanel, so their designer either isn't aware it's a custom protected typeface or they have the rights to use it?

does anyone know what software CreativeNRG is using to view the contents of the SWF file?

thanks.
