Illustrator file format (.ai) not recognized by windows. (?)

Hi,

I'm just stuck with this issue. I have Adobe Suite CS3 for some time now, and I don't know why, the .ai files are not associated with Illustrator. I already reinstalled the whole Suite and nothing.
Apparently if I drag a file into Illustrator it opens, but it's just boring. I want this to work properly.
I'm just loosing patience here.
Some help would be appreciated :).

Thanks
João

P.S.: I know this is no typophile like issue, but I have no patience to google.

Right click > Open with > check Always open with this app

well, I already tried that, but apparently the only program that doesn't appear on the software list it's precisely Illustrator.

Here's a SS.

Even if I go to the Illustrator folder, and select the app file (.exe) it doesn't work.

Thanks
João

P.S.: "Abrir com..." > "Open with..."

Even if I go to the Illustrator folder, and select the app file (.exe) it doesn’t work

The one shown isn't properly an app file, but a shortcut. Try to locate the proper .exe
(it should be in Adobe\Adobe Illustrator CS3\Support Files\Contents\Windows\Illustrator.exe)

Even with that. Tried Also.

Thanks for you patience :)

Are you confident enough in your computer skills to use RegEdit? (But it might not work anymore -- Windows 7?)

Are you suggesting to reinstall the Suite and use regedit to delete the registry? Yes I'll probably try that, but later :) I'll post the result, and thanks for the tip :)

Ah, no. It ought to work (probably), but you can first try manually changing the association.

In HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT, ".ai" points to a default handler for "Adobe.Illustrator.13". This key, in turn, contains all necessary Explorer information -- eg., the icon to use, but also the Shell stuff (as in "Open","Print").
The Shell subkey there contains a subkey "open", which then has a subkey "command", and this is finally the one to edit. Its value "(Default)" should read -- including the quotes

"C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe Illustrator CS3\Support Files\Contents\Windows\Illustrator.exe" "%1"

-- but note that this is the path on my system, and yours is highly likely different.

So, you mean this?

It's not working. :\

I'll try to reinstall the Suite tomorrow again, and delete the registry, and then.. pray.

Thank you for your elucidative answer :)

P.S.: (Predefinição) = (Default).

There is a slight difference with my setup (Win XP). In mine, the primary key ".ai" (which is picked up by the system as the file extension -- oui, mon fier Mac amices, that's how Windows' file system works!). That contains another definition as default: "Adobe.Illustrator.13” -- and that is the name of another key further down the list, with all details. I think you should leave the key you just changed to "Adobe.Illustrator.13".

.. Oh well, there is also the possiblity it's all changed with Win 7.

My OS is Vista 64

Ok. Just solved the problem by checkin' my girlfriends reg editor.

Thank you for your availability. :D
