I live in Lake Forest, Orange County.
I’m a nobody… working on becoming a somebody, though. I’m currently working on my first font, I might put a sample on the critique forum this weekend.
I guess this is my way of introducing myself.
I’ve been fond of typography, and graphic design for years… and one day it’d be nice to turn my hobby into my profession.
Talk to you guys later. (No more lurking for me.)
I wanted to let you guys know that Gerald Lange (former master printer for USC) will again be teaching his letterpress class at the ArtCenter in Pasadena (at the new “wind-tunnel” location). It’s 14 weeks of some serious type and cylinder press printing. Gerald is as fun as he’s educational, and even though I took the class about a year ago, I still feel the new insight into old type trickling down to me almost every day. The stuff you realize when actually holding metal type in your hand, putting the sorts in the stick and not to mention rolling the paper on the inked form, can actually put a smile on your face. BTW, it starts in mid-May, and there’s a limit of ten students per semester.

Brian just told me about this:

Hrant,
Funny! If you’re ever in neighborhood, I’ll take you to lunch. =)
There’s another cool Japanese restaurant that I like (well maybe not as authentic as the places in Little Tokyo). It’s at the Beverly Center, and it’s called Todai. It’s an all-you-can-eat seafood buffet. You should’ve seen me pig out at that place a week. They’ve got so much good fish, and I believe they even had yellowtail sashimi. And the best part: they prepare you custom crepes.
Lauri
Hrant,
I think you should definately give Todai a try, it’s to-die for. ;)
I checked the yellow pages (Yahoo one) for Katsu and I didn’t find it, so I guess they’ren’t around any longer.
Please let me know when there’s something cool going on in LA typography/graphic design-wise. Because I’d love to go… I’m still a newbie to a certain things and I’d like to learn more.
Thanks!
Lauri
Dr Levon Chookaszian will give a lecture (in Armenian, but with a lot of illustrations) on “THE DECORATED LETTERS OF ARMENIAN MANUSCRIPTS”, at the Glendale Central Library (222 E. Harvard St.) on Sunday, March 20, at 4:00 p.m. I’ll be there, but the extent of real-time translation I could provide depends on many factors. :-)

Oh, I'd forgotten about this thread...
Here you go then! http://typophile.com/node/15756

Attention alphabetic Angelenos!

I might take my class on a field trip to it.
Let me know if you'd like to make it bigger.

Hrant,
That sounds like fun... guess who else is coming to town?

I live in Orange County. A lot of my graffiti photos were taken in downtown LA: http://www.fontplay.com/freephotos/graffitiart.htm
And this cool mannequin was under the 10 freeway in a seedy area
somewhere near (south-east of?) the Staples Center:

I'm not new to Socal, but I'm new to the typography scene.
I'm looking for opportunities to learn, network, and collaborate.
I will be applying to MFA Design programs in the fall. Right now, I think OTIS is the frontrunner, but I'm still considering other schools.
I have a lot of website-related experience, if anyone wants to barter his/her type knowledge in exchange for help with website stuff.
Eric, welcome to this wonderful bottomless pit.
Generally no bartering necessary - just ask your
questions and put stuff up for a crit, and people
will help just for the hell of it.
BTW, I assume you've looked at ArtCenter?
Unrelated: I learned about this exhibit during
the ATypI conference: http://andlab.com/art/
hhp
Ah... good to see signs of life!
Yes, I looked at ArtCenter and pretty much every other MFA program. What appeals to me about OTIS is the focus on graphic design, as opposed to "media design". My goal is to become a teacher.
Also, my BA is in Politics, not design. So I'm definitely looking for a program rooted in fundamentals. OTIS seems to be that program. That said, I still have yet to go and actually meet with Admissions and take a tour.
Thanks for the link, btw.
If anyone is having an event, opening, or gathering in the future, please let me know!
Thanks!

Wow, didn't know about this thread till now. I'm in Torrance. Yay for SoCal Type Fanatics! Are any of you fans of the International Printing Museum in Carson? Great local resource for type nerds like us...
