fonts for school newspaper?

zydrius

Hello,

I was asked to design a newspaper for primary school.

And a bit confused, after work with big brands...

What fonts U would use if where asked the same??

Thanks for thoughts,

Z.

What’s your budget?
Who’s your audience?
What is the newspaper writing about?

For basic text work you’ll need a family with minimum regular, italic, bold. I recommend a typeface with small caps and both old style figures and lining figures. I’d consider adding a medium and and a demi bold (slightly darker than the bold weight) as well, for setting white text on coloured background, and smaller text like footnotes, sidenotes captions and such. Another option is a text family with optical sizes.
Transitional typefaces are quite common in news design. They are less quiet than old style serifs (mainly used for books). Newsprint is rather dodgy, so you’ll need something that can handle ink spread and poor paper.

Here’s a few contemporary suggestions:

• Newzald by Kris Sowersby
• Freight by Joshua Darden
• Farnham by Christian Schwartz
• FF Tisa by Mitja Miklavčič
• Galaxie Copernicus by Chester Jenkins and Kris Sowersby

For display you need something that can offer more punch. Perhaps a sans serif design — minimum light/regular/black(or bold) — or a serif design with a lot of contrast between horisontals and verticals. Depending on the content/format you might need narrow versions of the headline fonts. The display fonts will be your main tool for setting the tone of your newspaper. It can be whimsical, serious, trendy +++, depending on your audience.
I’d consider pairing a sans and a serif with similar skeleton to allow for variations.

Btw: A narrow text font might come in handy!

Frank, you make many suggestions without waiting for answers to your good questions:
What’s your budget?
Who’s your audience?
What is the newspaper writing about?

IMHO these make a real difference. Is that paper for kids or parents of that primary school?

Andreas

I assumed it was for Žydrūnas own school. We don’t use the term primary school in my country. Most of my reasoning apply in either case. Let’s hear what he has to say first.

budget is really low. newsprint, 2 colors. I think i will go with black and orange (autumn here).

Tone of voice – make these 4 pages interesting to audience (girls and boys, 12-17 years old.)

so – less corporate, more friendly and youthful.

FF Tisa way if speaking in fonts, i think.

Maybe anyone had real deal with something simiral?

Thanks, Z.

So if budget is really low, have you had a look at the new Vista fonts, namely Calibri, Constantia, Candara and Cambria? You have fonts with a fairly modern look, the charset you need, and the price is unbeatable.

If your budget is low, this might be the perfect alternative: http://stonetypefoundry.com/silicaoverview.html

It only misses italics. But you could always do without if you bend your mind.

Edit: This is quite limited, no sc, no osf.

OSX come bundled with some good typefaces, if you’re working on a Mac. Have a look at Hoefler Text! And perhaps something really playful for the headlines, like Underware’s Liza Display Pro.

Another suggestion: pair Museo with Museo Sans.

I think an important question (not sure if it's been asked or answered as I've not read the thread) is if the students and staff are going to take the design and do the layout on a day-to-day basis? If so I think the font choices need to be idiot-proof or child-proof depending on who's doing the layout.
