Hi Typophiles,
I am designing a book about fashion, and I'm trying to avoid using the standard Didot.I'm sure you all have some ideas? Thank you so much for your help.
Janet
You can certainly start here: http://www.fontshop.com/fontlist/subclasses/serif_modern/
H&FJ has a great cut of Didot.
Depending on how many headlines there is, how about commisioning a calligrapher or a lettering artist? I remember Acne Magazine did, for the script they paired with Didot. It worked great.
Also, don’t write of sans serifs! There is a custom face called Fashion Thin that is very interesting. Related: Finura
Edit: Never mind:) Spent to much time writing this post
Have a look at Didot Elder and Ambroise.
Headlines or body text?
Some suggestions here:

Try out Scotch Modern from Shinntype. Optical sizes, a companion sans, and instead of using a high-end Didot you’re using a killer modern design that people don’t just recognize.
I am about to release a type family designed to offer a good alternative to Didot and Bodoni. If you mail me to info@re-type.com I will be happy to send you some examples.
Cheers.
Ramiro.
How about the less commonplace didone fonts Yves Peters suggests in his ScreenFonts article: FF Holmen or FF Danubia?
You could also have a little fun with Peter Biľak’s History (combining History 01 and History 03, which could give you a nice “Didot Sans”).
