I can't figure out if these lines rendered by hand (in Illustrator?) or done with some application -- anybody suggest an approach?

Neat infographic and how do you make lines like this?
My guess is that it started as a single path, the extras were added by creating parallel paths with Illustrator or some other tool, and then an envelope distort was use to draw them all together before wrapping up with some manual tweaking.
And that is a great infographic!
