Monotype supports pirates

FlyerRick

Monotype is concerned about its brand image, yet it supports pirate web sites via banner advertising:

[link removed by moderator — it is Typophile's policy to avoid live links to pirate sites]

Mail them and let them know what you think about this practice.

It isn't clear to me what you are saying here. Can you lay it out more plainly?

What Monotype is actually doing is making use of Google's ad service which places ads based on keywords, i.e. advertisements for fonts get placed on webpages dealing with fonts. But Google has no automatic way of knowing whether a given website dealing with fonts is a pirate site or a legitimate site. So by all means write to Monotype and alert them to their ads appearing on a pirate site: they can then contact Google and have that site added to a blacklist of sites on which their ads should not appear. It's not as if Monotype have gone out and deliberately paid the pirate site to host their ads.

I think the Google ad model as currently implemented is very problematic. The non-Internet equivalent would be putting an ad on a sandwich board but then not giving the guy carrying the board any directions about where to walk in the city, and only after someone spots him standing in front of a brothel next to people doing a heroin deal telling him not to go down that street.

Another example: in my bank branch there is a flat panel TV showing a business news channel, which often shows commercials for other banks.

So let me get this straight:
You object to Monotype's ad showing up on windowsfonts which, I must assume, is a "pirate" site which you have now plugged by adding a link to it on Typophile.
Are we being punk'd here or what? Is this a lesson in irony? ;)

You could be right. Hmmm, anonymous post - new member - clever spam for the site in question maybe?

They have a lot of the usual free fonts there. I was surprised to find those 3 House Industries fonts there. Indeed, House does currently give away 3 free fonts, but not those three. The poster is currently a member for 1 day 10 hours.

more than that! malware, Antivirus System Pro (the fake security software). be careful!

Maybe this thread should be deep sixed... what say ye?

The sooner the better.

Arrrr, to Davey Jones locker wit it!

Every time I see the wor "pirate" in a thread title, I want to say "Arrrr".

Thank you, Si, for relieving me of that burden here, si.

Q: Why are there pirates?
A:They just arrr.

My apologies. Eben, why not get rid of the link in the first place? I thought you can do it.

Link to the site removed, but I don't see cause to delete the entire thread.

Maybe because of the lame attempts at humour…?
: )

Lame pirates? It's the scurvy.

Thanks Stephen!

In case anybody's interested:
Unlicensed Distributors Of The Carribbean III is on cable tonight.

Another example: in my bank branch there is a flat panel TV showing a business news channel, which often shows commercials for other banks.

A more accurate analogy: in my bank branch there is a flat panel TV showing a channel that gives out ATM numbers and passwords of random customers, which often shows commercials for other banks.
