what is your favourite small size text serif typeface?

Sanyo

good evening to everybody!

I am new here and I would like to
adress a general question to everyone.

what is your favourite latin serif
typeface for extensive books or text
and small sizes?

please tell more about the typeface like
designer information, foundry, history,
shape analysis and also the reason why
you like it!

thanks sanyo

ps: you can also post up to three typefaces,
if you have to.

Probably Celeste Small by Chris Burke.

it is a very beautiful and clean typeface! b and q and R is nice.
thanks for posting!

Joanna

joanna and joanna italic are also my favourites!

Baskerville. I.e. Baskerville Ten Pro by František Štorm: http://www.stormtype.com/typefaces-fonts-shop/families-77-baskerville-10...

Joanna is a great looking typeface, and one of the most original serifs produced in XX century typography, but I doubt that, as often happens, its digital rendition can reach the true spirit of the original metal. It is already been stressed by someone else in this forum, but a great contemporary and very well-working typeface which somehow resembles the shapes of Joanna (without the idiosyncracies and faults of the digital version) is Whitman by Kent Lew, a font which I’ve used in setting books and that I find particulary helpful in running text and even in covers, when set at big sizes.

And speaking of typeface for books: I’m currently using Cycles, by Sumner Stone, one of the few successful achievement in digital typography in recent years. Apart from being so nicely executed and drawned, Cycles is available in various sizes, from 5 to 36, so it is very helpful for “complex book typography”, when you need the right font weight for the main text, the titles, the footnotes, etc. Once you’ll start using Cycles, you’ll forget most of the serifs you’ve used before.

thank you for postings! two types (whitman, cycles)I have not seen before.
cycles has a very good contrast, the serifs are very elegant and the colour is very well.

... “but I doubt that, as often happens, its digital rendition can reach the true spirit of the original metal” ncaleffi you are right!

“one of the few successful achievement in digital typography in recent years.”

I meant “one of the BEST successful achievement” - there are many others recent great digital typefaces, of course.

to ncaleffi:
do you have a sample text set with cycles,
maybe a photograph?

You should definitely have a look at FF Clifford (Six).

Some more info and samples here.

Another “world class” Text Serif! I just had a look at the story behind,
very interesting, and the Typeface is also a very solid work.

Thanks for Posting

Paperback is very readable at small sizes.
