Inglourious Basterds opening credits font (not Benguiat)

Are Bart

Anybody know this one?

Hi Are,

that’s Friz Quadrata.
F

That's pretty close, but I don't think that's it. The serifs seem to be much more rounded in the Basterds-variant. This is a crappy cam screenshot, and one could assume the poor quality makes it seem rounded, but I also noticed the rounded serifs when I saw it at the cinema.

In a slightly related note, all the typefaces used in that movie titling and credits seemed very deliberate . . . Very height of 1970 flavor . . .

Looks like there's a stroke applied, may explain the rounding?

I think the rounding is just visual, as result of a blurry picture taken from a cinema screen.

Kind regards,
Martijn van Berkel

I'm afraid the rounding isn't the result of a blurry picture (I saw the movie myself at the cinema).

@Bendy: I agree, probably a stroke applied. Thanks.

that is most definitly the Friz no doubt. what they did was add a stroke with rounded edges and then added a copy layer which was then blurred to make it glow like that. then they stetched it vertically a bit and dropped the capitals below the baseline. try it yourself and find out. it will look exactly the same.

... and what are the bets they used this typeface just because it had the word 'Fritz' in the name...

All type looks slightly soft on film — even when you see it in person. I am betting on Friz Quadrata.
