Garamond / Baskerville / Caslon / Bembo

bibigoogles

hi, i was wondering if anyone here could help me.. i'm trying to find companies/logotypes/products etc. that show exemplar usages of these fonts for my type class .. i've come up with a few on my own so far, but Baskerville is still eluding me.. any help on any of the four fonts [Garamond, Baskerville, Caslon, or Bembo] would be appreciated!

Gallimard, the French publisher, puts Baskerville to hyperclassy use in their "Folio" series of pocket books.

Fitting, since it was the French who saved Baskerville's punches from oblivion at the hands of his own countrymen.

GE's corporate typefaces are ITC New Baskerville and Univers. Any piece of GE sales literature or packaging should use New Baskerville if a serif typeface is used.

Apple's corporate typeface is condensed Garamond; they use it for absolutely everything.

hmm.. General Electric literature/packaging was already on my list for New Baskerville.. any other suggestions? What does Abode use.. ? is it Caslon?

keep em coming!

thanks again :-)

Myriad is a lot less bad than that freak ITC Garamond Light Condensed (then tweaked). But I wonder what happened to Apple's "famed" imagination...

Isn't PHAIDON in Baskerville??

PHAIDON was on my list already too.. i think i've got enough for now? :-)

Incidentally, i had a HUGE example of Baskerville staring me literally right in the face the whole time: a giant Rage Against the Machine music poster..! http://images.amazon.com/images/P/B000031KGU.01.LZZZZZZZ.jpg

thanks for everyone's help! :-)

Adobe seems to use mostly Myriad and Minion.

The New Yorker uses (or used) Adobe Caslon. Critical Review uses Bembo on some nice paper. First Things uses ITC New Baskerville, and while the paper is good I wish they'd switch to a different Baskerville. The New Criterion does wonders with Galliard CC. Strangely, I can't think of any magazines or journals off the top of my head that use a Garamond.

Because Apple want to sell itself to Adobe?

More serious, I don

Go get 'em, Stephen, we're right behind ya! :-) Actually, it makes sense, and it would do the world of publishing and graphic design a lot of good, counterbalancing the current emphasis on the "art" director. I once witnessed a discussion between two of those trying to decide which typeface should go on a shopping bag. After half an hour(!) of uninterupted to and fro, one of them suddenly jumped up, a victorious smile on his face, and went: "I've got it! Let's use Helvetica!" Djeeez...

ahh.. the apex of the A = Perpetua.. Phaidon should probably come off my list..

thanks

Reviving custom lettering? it never die to me? Just that, the design market is suddenly so big that we see in percentage same bad choices, but now in quantity who make us depressed more. that

UMMM... yeah. didn't i say Perpetua?? :/ In a way it should have been obvious. Right. I mean the usual equation and all. England + Corporation or Company = something design by Eric Gill.*

*This is written with tongue firmly in cheek by the way.

Collect those Univers/Baskerville GE samples while you can. It seems as though GE is changing to Trade Gothic (condensed for body copy!), changing

It looks like a junkyard. How strangely apt.

You guys might be right, but I still think the GE logo is really purty. Always loved it. Adding 3D to it is kinda gratuituous, though...

i'm sorry but I truly hate it. I mean the addition of the supercool 3d shading. It reminds me of the Palm logo. Perhaps even more proof that there are no original ideas left. Ironic considering their new slogan.

Yves, I, too, have always liked the GE logo. I hate what they're doing to it.

To me, the punch line is that GE is reportedly spending 1/10 of a billion dollars on this makeover. You don't need to have taste to spend big bucks. The whole thing seems like a bad joke.

I'm really disappointed that they've dropped Baskerville. I always thought it added a lot of class to their materials, plus there were things like small caps and oldstyle figures available. I design some of the trade show graphics for one of GE's businesses, so I'm really depressed with the changes they're implementing.

The original GE logotype is MORE than 100 years old. I believe it was designed in 1894. Definitely 189x...

Apple's corporate typeface is condensed Garamond

This may be a seperate discussion, but Apple's switched
almost entirely from their proprietary Garamond Cond. to
Adobe's Myriad. Modernizing, i suppose.

Adobe seems to use mostly Myriad and Minion.

Which makes Apple's choice of Myriad all the more puzzling. Why mimic Adobe's look?

That is depressing indeed - and embarassing to the field
of design, which endevours to give each client a distinctive
aesthetic identity. I'm going to try to do something about it.
Think it's possible to see the rebirth of the type director?

Wow, it's is the evil opposite of Apple's "Think Different"
campaign. Next up: A montage of all of Picaso's work?

Oh lordy! When will the 3D-shaded logo trend end?

Can any one help me find brands and texts which use baskerville???

Which Baskerville, the original or Fry's?
