1920's san serif fonts

Arran24 June 2009 · 03:17

Hi everyone, im working on a project at the moment and want to find some fonts that are from the 1920's as this is relevant to the company. Can anyone offer any insight into san serif fonts that were prevalent in the 1920's?
Thanks in advance

Hi Arran,

here’s a little list. Some of them have been designed before the 1920s.

Venus
Berthold Akzidenz Grotesk
Aurora
Industria
Splendid Grotesk
Stempel Reform Grotesk
Berthold Block

Monotype Grotesque
News Gothic
Franklin Gothic

Issued rather at the end of the 1920s, popular in the 1930s:
Erbar Grotesk
Kabel
Futura
Neuzeit Grotesk
Gill Sans

Thanks both, most helpful. I feel that because the main project will be a few journals on different topics i might have to plump for good old akzidenz.... though perhaps with a tweak for good measure. What i probably didnt and should have mentioned is that ideally id like to find a fontn that can primarily work as body copy, but if it can look good at display size too then thats a bonus.
Florian i couldnt find any link to Splendid Grotesk – can you steer me in the right direction?

There’s some information about Splendid Grotesk, its roots and possible digital replacements in this thread.
