Have you tried the little RSS link located beneath every post? Subscribe to that and you can get the latest responses to any particular thread.

In Firefox you can save the rss link as a "Live Bookmark", which creates a folder with the updated entries.

It's still a rss solution, but slightly more manageable then using a full-fledged reader.

How do you get to that link from the main page?

As things stand - you don't. You can make a bookmark however!
