Top 8-10 Quality Design/Type Book Publishers? (In the US?)

dave bailey

Hey everyone!

I'm embarking into uncharted territory and would love some help if anyone has experience or knowledge in this area. What I'm looking to compile is a list of the top 8-10 design or type related book publishers. This publisher would probably have to be in the United States, but I can still look into foreign publishers. I've been asked to help gather information that will hopefully lead to the publishing of an art book of sorts, filled from end to end with custom type.

My only find so far is: http://www.watsonguptill.com/ The obvious plan of attack is to hit the more design oriented bookstores, but I figured that I could throw this into the Typophile mix to see how you all feel.

Thanks!

I don't know what qualifies as "top," but I suggest you include Mark Batty Publisher on your list to explore.

They're not American, but it seems like that might be a bad reason for not putting Hyphen Press on your list anyway.

Cool, thanks Kent and Nina!

Chronicle Books is great if you’re already planning this to be an art book as opposed to a book that actually makes money.

Oak Knoll Press has a wide range of books on all aspects of design and type.

James - I'm actually helping do research for someone who's well established in his niche. Obviously not looking to make millions, but I think it will be the right timing to make a decent chunk of change *fingers crossed*!

Will - Thanks!

Craig — Perfect! Thanks!

Yale University Press publishes a number of design books, but I don't know if they're a top publisher.

Perhaps my use of 'top' was the incorrect adjective. I'm trying to find as many as possible, then presenting the 8-10 I think would most likely publish this book to my co-worker!

David R Godine doesn't have a huge selection of books on typography, but their catalog has some really important books: Letters of Credit; Anatomy of a Typeface; A Tally of Types; An Essay on Typography.
