I got an unrelated question...why are you guys using inDesign for one page projects? I thought that was more of a multipage kind of thing?

that's a silly question (sorry my own opinion) i don't see why you wouldn't use indesign for anything you needed to design for print.

As a former Quark user who moved to InDesign a year ago, I can say that I've always used Illustrator as its name implies: for illustrations, charts, logos, etc. I've always assembled the various parts of a project in a page layout program, a practice that continues quite happily today with InDesign, whether the document has one page or 50.

It would be interesting if people started choosing InDesign over Illustrator for single page work, certainly.

I use Freehand, because it always annoyed me how you could only ever have a single page in Illustrator (which seemed to me to be an arbitary restriction), and I couldn't afford Illustrator AND a 700 quid DTP app AND FontLab. Something had to give. Feature bloat, which lets illustration packages act more like DTPers, and DTPers acting more like illustration packages, blurs the boundries?

Mind you, I worked out a cunning way of getting InDesign CS for under 300 quid here in the UK, so maybe its time to get all jiggy with opentype...

Yup, Illustrator has all of those things these days. Methinks Stephen is using a version of Illustrator earlier than CS.

I'm deadly serious, Tiff. If you've ever composed a 30 line block of 8 point copy in Illustrator and had to manually draw in underlines, you'll know why I asked. If I'm just ignorant and there's a way to do it, my god, someone please tell me.

Jumping in here from the Jenson OT posts: I am currently having the same good time. I'm kicking around Jenson Pro for some classy invitation collateral (I refuse to use traditional scripts, because I'm contrary).

Isn't it nice when the technologies come together so well?

Yes, multi-line composer, optical kerning option, glyph palette, tons of OpenType layout support (with a new and improved UI). But no underlining.

To critic Adobe CS and OT:

What will be good is the day when all Adobe Applications use same style of OT palettes and give same OT features options, as when you start a job on one appl then move to the other, and lost some part of your typographic possiblities is not easy situation.

Vive Quark! specially because there is no choice to make at that level, its more easy ;-)

it look so easy. Oh FontLab, you make it look so hard!

Frankly, it's nothing earth-shattering, yaknow. Just a quick
stupid little post card with an ugly picture on the front for
a travel agency. But the actual process of typesetting is so
smoooth, especially with the automatic small caps and ligature
features, without having to select separate fonts'n'stuff.

I know! The first thing that popped up in my mind when the
assignment landed on my desk was: "These guys'd better not
organize anything in English-speaking countries". The sweetest
thing about this is that they're actually marketing themselves as
rather upscale, for the well-to-do, somewhat older traveler.

For one it's not a one page project: front and back. Also, though
I've always been an Illustrator fan for all my single-page work
I am extremely irritated at the incomprehensible fact that type
anchor points have ceased to exist as physical, clickable
elements, so I am quite annoyed with the CS version for the
moment. To keep the parallel going: we are sleeping in separate
beds for the foreseeable future.
Also, I didn't need any specific Illustrator functionalities.

I use illustrator all of the time for 2-sided simple things. Before Indy (why I now use), Illustrator became my goto app. I realized that while I had preached to my students that they should reserve illustrator for illustrative things and then put it all together in Quark .... well I realized a few years ago that I hated doing type in Quark. I mean it is possible but I found that type is much easier to do in Illy. When Indy came along I started using it when the items I designed required more than 2 paragraphs of type. But, I still find myself using Illy for Book Jackets and single page ads.

Don't look at Illustator vs. InDesign as single vs. multiple page.
Think of it as illustration vs. typography.

I don't know that I totally agree with that Stephen. I think, on small projects, you can do typography in Illustrator.

True, single words or lines are sometimes easier in Ill, esp. resizing.
But once you get to the paragraph level, it's not nearly as powerful or efficient.
No columns, no hyphen controls, no character or paragraph styles.

illustrator does have column ability and hyphenation control
