Fontlab Bold Effect

msmiths

Is it just me or does Fontlab do a better job with the bold effect when it is a positive integer as opposed to a negative one. i.e. bold effect 10 vs. bold effect -10, could it really be any different, it's applying the same function… I know it's an imperfect science by nature but it seems like I have a lot more work to do if I apply a negative integer to a glyph than a positive… and I'm talking in general with relatively non-complex character forms…

It is possible. You can always try the approach: make it bold and then use blend to extrapolate a light using your bold and your regular (or build a MM out of the regular and the bold).

Mike, you’re right, negative bold results are pretty flaky. Adam’s suggestion is probably the way to go.

Positive and negative bolding are identical to "Make parallel path".

I haven't tried blend yet… Now I'm really interested in learning about building MM versions… I was wondering if the negative bold results were just my perception… thanks for the replies!
